India has retained its spot in the top 10 best-performing countries (for the third year after 2020, 2021) and ranked 10th in the global Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2022, which was released by Germanwatch on the sidelines of the COP26 (26th Conference of Parties).
Overall Results CCPI 2022:
The first three overall positions remain empty as no country performs well enough in all index categories to achieve an overall very high rating.

India’s Performance:
i.India’s performance was rated high in the GHG(Green House Gas) Emissions, Energy Use, and Climate Policy categories, and medium in Renewable Energy.
ii.CCPI stated India as close to achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target of a 40 percent share for non-fossil fuel installed power capacity by 2030, and on course for a targeted 33–35 percent reduction in energy intensity by the same year.
iii.It stated India’s targets of renewable electricity capacity of 450 GW and a 30 percent electric vehicle share by 2030.
G20’s Performance:
i.With the United Kingdom (7th), India (10th), Germany (13th), and France (17th), four G20 countries are among the high-performing countries in CCPI 2022.
ii.Saudi Arabia is the worst-performing country among the G20, which ranked 63rd.
- G20 are responsible for about 75% of the world’s GHG emissions.
Note- China, the biggest current polluter, which spotted at 37th position (down from 33rd last year) while the second most current emitter is the United States, it was at 55th spot.

i.The CCPI is an independent monitoring tool that was Published annually since 2005 for tracking the climate protection performance of 60 countries and the European Union.
ii.The climate protection performance of those countries, which together account for 92% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is assessed in four categories: GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use and Climate Policy consisting of 14 indicators.
