IKEA India Pvt Ltd Wins 1st UN Women 2020 Asia-Pacific WEPs Regional AwardsThe 1st United Nations(UN) Women 2020 Asia-Pacific Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Regional award winners were announced in a ceremony on December 15, 2020 in  Bangkok, Thailand. IKEA India Pvt Ltd won this award in Gender-inclusive Workplace category. It is the only winner from India.

In total there are 6 categories in the awards, where each category will have one winner and 2 runner ups.

About UN Women 2020 Asia-Pacific WEPs Awards

Launched & Sponsored by 

WeEmpowerAsia programme, a joint programme by the European Union and UN Women launched the awards.WeEmpowerAsia is also the sponsor of the awards.

Aim

To encourage, value and recognize the efforts of individuals and businesses that promote gender-inclusive business cultures and the achievement of gender equality in the Asia-Pacific, guided by WEPs.

Note– 2020 marks the 10th anniversary of the WEPs

National Winners of the Awards

i.The awards have national winners with additional Local Ceremonies in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

ii.Only the first place winners in each of the six categories qualify for the Asia-Pacific regional awards.

UN Women Asia-Pacific 2020 WEPs Awards Ceremony in India

i.On December 1, 2020 UN Women presented India’s awards in a virtual ceremony on December 1 through the UN Women India Facebook page.

ii.21 private companies in India received the award.

Tata Power-Delhi Distribution Ltd Wins Award in 2 Categories

i.Tata Power- Delhi Distribution Ltd(DDL) became the 1st Runner Up in the Community & Industry Engagement category of the award for its ”UNNATI” initiative which focuses on women empowerment.

ii.It also became the 2nd Runner Up in the COVID-19 Action category of the award for adopting a gender sensitive response to the pandemic.

About Tata Power-Delhi Distribution Ltd(DDL):

i.It is a Joint Venture(JV) between Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by Tata Power Company (51%).

ii.It has been empaneled as ‘1st Utility Channel Partner’ with the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Govt. of India.

iii.It is the first Indian utility to be a member of Global Intelligent Utility Network Coalition(GIUNC), a coalition of 14 power utilities worldwide.

What are Women’s Empowerment Principles(WEPs)?

i.WEPs is a set of 7 principles for business offering guidance on how to empower women in the workplace, marketplace and community.

ii.It was jointly  promulgated by UN Women and the UN Global Compact.

iii.These are a primary vehicle for corporate delivery on gender equality dimensions of the 2030 agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

On December 16, 2020 Amar Singh College, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir received the ‘Award of Merit’ in the 2020 UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. It is one of the 7 award winners of the 2020 awards. It is the first international award given to cultural heritage in Kashmir.
