73rd Martyrs’ Day – 30th January 2021

Martyrs' Day 2021The Martyrs’ Day which is also known as “Shaheed Diwas” is annually observed across India on 30th January to pay respect to the martyrs who lost their lives during India’s freedom struggle. The day will also mark the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The 30th January 2021 marks the 73rd Martyrs Day or Shaheed Diwas.

Note:

Another Martyrs Day is observed in India on 23rd March, the death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru who were hanged to death by British on 23rd March 1931 in Lahore, Pakistan.

Aim:

To pay respect to the martyrs who sacrifices their life in the fight to gain Independence to India

Assasination of Gandhi:

i.Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 at Birla House compound, New Delhi by Nathuram Vinayak Godse who had opposed Gandhi’s view on Partition of India.

ii.From that day onwards the 30th January of every year is observed as Shaheed Diwas to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Events 2021:

i.As a tribute to the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi, the film divisions streamed “Gandhi Rediscovered”, a 27 minutes documentary in Both Hindi and English, which discuss the scope of Swadeshi.

ii.The documentary will be streamed throughout the day on the website and youtube channel of Films Division.

About Mahatma Gandhi:

i.Mahatma Gandhi born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2nd October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.

ii.He played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement in 12 countries.

iii.He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for 5 times (1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 & 1948) but was never awarded the prize.
