41st G-7 nations agree to space out fossil fuels by 2100

Group of seven wealthy democracies had agreed that the world should phase out the fossil fuel usage by the end of this century, as according to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. ”Decarbonise the global economy in the course of this century” was the commitment given by G-7 nations.

The 41st G7 summit was held in Schloss Elmau, Krün, Bavaria, Germany on June 7–8, 2015

G 7 Nations and their objectives–

  • It includes USA,Canada,France, Germany,Italy, Japan,UK. The G7 nations agreement says that in long term economies will have to be powered by non-polluting energy.
  • Ending the use of oil,gas, coal and replacing them with energy like wind solar power is the main criteria.
  • Burning of carbon-based fuels causes carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere thereby creating global warming.
  • The G7 nations leaders also pledged to increase renewable energy access in Africa and recommitted to $100 billion a year in climate finance which is required to support developing countries in their effort to shift from use of fossil fuels to renewable energies.

Greenhouse gases

  • G7 nations leaders also committed to international greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 40 to 70% by 2050.
  • These greenhouse gases absorb and emits radiations within their thermal infrared ranges.
  • They are responsible for the greenhouse effect.

Fossil fuels– what are they??

  • They are formed by the anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms.
  • They may be as old as 650 million years also.
  • Fossil fuels has carbon content in them and some examples are coal,petroleum, natural gas etc.
  • Kerosene and propane are two types of fossil fuels that are used.
  • Fossil formation theory was first introduced by George Agricola in 1556.
  • Burning of fossil fuels leads to emission of carbon dioxide gases which causes global warming, thereby leading to raise in earth’s surface temperature.
