EAM  Jaishankar virtually Addresses the 2020 GTS – 5th Edition organized by MEA, CI

External Affairs Minister addresses 2020 Global Technology SummitExternal Affairs Minister (EAM), Jaishankar virtually addressed the 2020 Global Technology Summit (GTS)5th Edition, It was jointly organized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Carnegie India (CI) from December 14-18, 2020. The Theme of 2020 GTS is “Geopolitics of Technology”.

i.Sub theme of GTS 2020 – Data: Linking the World, Digital Payments: The Future of Global Financial Highways, Digital Inclusion: Taking the Local to the Global, and Transforming Healthcare for a Post-COVID World.

ii.GTS is one of the four Flagship annual conferences organized by MEA, the other three being – Raisina Dialogue, the Geo-Economic Dialogue & the Indian Ocean Conference.

Prominent Speakers:

The summit was attended by prominent personalities like Adar Poonawalla, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Serum Institute of India (SII); Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog; Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

Gist of the Conference:

i.The topics of discussion during the conference were –

  • Technology in shaping geopolitics
  • Future of data
  • Digital inclusion & innovation
  • Technology in tackling pandemics

ii.It will also discuss how countries across the world view globals arenas of collaboration & competition.

Key Points from EAM’s address:

i.EAM S Jaishankar argued for the reformation process in the United Nations (UN).

ii.Reformed multilateralism is necessary as International Organizations like the UN should reflect today’s reality & address contemporary challenges.

iii.He pointed out that P5 nations – United States, United Kingdom, Russia, France & China are losing elections in the UN, as the thinking of member states are changing.

iv.During the summit, various conversations, workshops, panel discussion and special addresses were conducted.

Carnegie India (CI):

It was established in 2016 to focus on 3 interrelated programs – technology and society, political economy, and security studies.CI is the Indian chapter of the Washington-based Think Tank Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
