How to tackle farmer’s suicide issue

India has always been revered for its Agriculture as it is it primary sector in India. India is an agrarian economy, which means, Agriculture is the pre-dominant sector of the Indian economy. And , truly, even today close to 70 percent of the population is dependent on agriculture for livelihood.Although , the secondary and tertiary sectors in India are growing at rapid rates, still a vast majority of Indians continue to depend on agriculture. Every plan for the growth of the Indian economy aims at agricultural development, which is justified because to achieve the growth rates that the economy aims at, it is important to first address the growth rate of the major sector of the economy.

It is a dismal situation but true that the cases of farmer suicides in India have increased over the years. Farmer Suicides in India has seen an increase over the period of time. Growing disparity in the weather conditions, high debts, health issues, personal problems, frequent droughts, floods, economic crises, health issues, family responsibilities, changes in the government policies, alcohol addiction, low produce prices and poor irrigation facilities are among some of the common factors that contribute to farmer suicides in India.

There can be some initiatives that the government must take proactively to control the issue of farmer suicides in India like the government must set up exclusive agricultural zones where only agricultural activities should be allowed. Initiative must be taken to teach modern farming techniques to the farmers to help them increase farm productivity. Farmers need to be advised and guided on economical methods of cultivation which would save finances for them. Irrigation facilities must be improved. National weather risk management system must be put in place to alert farmers about the extreme weather conditions. Genuine crop insurance policies must be launched. Farmers must be encouraged to go for alternative sources of income and the government should take up the responsibility of providing training to the farmers to acquire new skills.  Making institutional finance available to every farmer is another important solution to save to the farmers from debt traps of money lenders. Where institutional finance is available, it should be made easily accessible to the poorest farmers. The complex procedures should be abolished. Relief packages should be given as a benefit to farmers to enable them to sustain their livelihood rather than as a relief to families of farmers who commit suicide.

The Government needs to come up with proactive solutions and the nation has to realize that farmers’ suicides are not minor issues happening in remote parts of a few states, it is a reflection of the true state of the basis of our economy. If India has to shine, it is these farmers that need to be empowered.
