Deepak Punia named 2019 UWW’s ‘Junior Freestyle Wrestler of the Year’ 

On December 17, 2019, The World Championships silver medallist Deepak Punia was named as the 2019 ‘Junior Freestyle Wrestler of the Year‘ by United World Wrestling (UWW). Punia is the first Indian wrestler in 18 years to win a junior world title at the Junior World Championships held in Talinn, Estonia in August 2019.deepak-punia-759Deepak Punia:

  • Deepak won the junior world title at the Junior World Championships in 86Kg freestyle category.
  • He is also the first Indian wrestler and the 2nd from the country to get honour from an international federation. Prior to him Late Yashvir Singh, who was adjudged ‘Coach of the Year’ in 2010 by the apex body (then FILA), was the first Indian to be recognised by the international federation.
  • FILA: It stands for Fédération internationale de lutte amateur (english: International Amateur Wrestling Federation).
