PM dedicates and Lays Foundation Stone of 11 projects worth over Rs 31,500 cr in TNPM dedicates to the nation and lays foundation stone of 11 projects worth over Rs 31,500 crore

i.The Prime Minister (PM) of India, Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone of 11 projects worth over Rs 31,500 crore in Chennai, Tamil Nadu (TN).
ii.The PM dedicated to the nation five projects worth over Rs 2960 crore including 75 km long Madurai-Teni (Railway Gauge Conversion Project) to facilitate access and give a boost to tourism in the region. Its project cost is Rs 500 crore.
iii.The PM Narendra Modi also addressed the joint graduation and Convocation ceremony of Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad (Telangana ) and Mohali (Punjab) of the PGP class 2022 in Hyderabad.

Adani Green Energy Arm Commissions India’s First Wind-Solar Hybrid Plant In Rajasthan

Adani Group step into commissioning of India’s first wind and solar hybrid power generation plant at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.A 390 megawatt (MW) wind-solar hybrid power plant was commissioned in Jaisalmer by Adani Hybrid Energy Jaisalmer One Limited (AHEJOL), a subsidiary of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL).

Key Information
i.AGEL’s operational capacity has increased to 5.8 GW following the commissioning of this 390 MW hybrid plant.

  • It will help AGEL’s total renewable 20.4 GW portfolio with its vision of 45 GW capacity by 2030.

ii.By eliminating generation intermittency and providing a more stable solution to meet escalating power demand, the hybrid power plant combined with solar and wind power generation exploits the full potential of renewable energy.
iii. The new plant has a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for a tariff of 2.69 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which is significantly lower than the national Average Power Procurement Cost (APPC), ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, modern, and clean energy.

ICF Chennai manufactures ‘Gati Sakthi’ trains – India’s 1st Semi-High Speed Freight Trains

Indian Railways announced its plan of introducing India’s 1st Semi-High Speed Freight Trains by December 2022. The 16-coach ‘Gati Shakti’ trains, based on the Vande Bharat platform, are capable of operating at a speed of 160 km per hour.
The trains will be manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • The Trains are constructed under “PM Gati Shakti – National Master Plan for Multi-modal Connectivity”, and are based on the concept of Vande Bharat trains.

Aim – Indian Railways targets to enhance India’s e-commerce and courier parcel segment, with these dedicated high speed freight trains. 
i.Indian Railways is set to increase its capacity in freight transportation to 45% in 2030, from the current 27%.
Note – According to Indian Brand Equity Foundation, as of 2020, India was the 8th largest e-commerce market in the world with USD 50 billion turnover. 

  • Indian e-commerce market is expected to grow upto USD 350 billion by 2030, with near future targets of USD 111 billion by 2024 & USD 200 billion by 2026.

Project Background:

  • At present, the overall target is set to 25 such freight trains, with 2 of them to be delivered by ICF in December 2022. 
  • The first & last wagons are refrigerated to support transport of perishable cargo like Milk, fish, fruits etc.
  • As of now,  74 new ‘Gati-Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) locations’ across India (with 20 from South India) were identified by the Indian Railways under the ‘Gati-Shakti Multi Model Cargo Terminal’ policy.

GoI Approved New Guidelines of Micro & Small Enterprises Cluster Development ProgrammeThe Government of India(GoI) has approved the New Guidelines of Micro & Small Enterprises Cluster Development Programme (MSECDP). The new guidelines of MSE-CDP are issued in supersession of the previous guidelines (2019) and encompass inter-alia, the procedure and funding pattern.

Yearlong celebrations to Commemorate 250th birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy

On 22nd May 2022, the Ministry of Culture organised an inaugural ceremony to mark the beginning of the yearlong celebration of the 250th Birth Anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
The inaugural ceremony was held at Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, Salt Lake, Kolkata, West Bengal(WB) and at Science City Auditorium, Kolkata, WB. 

  • The celebration, under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, will continue till 22nd May 2023. 
  • The day also marked the 50th foundation day of Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation. 
  • G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Culture virtually inaugurated the statue of Raja Ram Mohan Roy at the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.
  • Raja Ram Mohan Roy is known for setting up the Brahmo Samaj(1828)

UNICEF and WHO launch the first Global Report on Assistive Technology

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) jointly launched the first Global Report on Assistive Technology (GReAT) which is the culmination of the 71st World Health Assembly (WHA) resolution in 2018 to prepare a global report on effective access to Assistive Technology (AT).

  • As per the report, 90% of those who need AT do not have access to it globally.
  • Including AT into health systems is critical for progress towards the targets in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) relating to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). 

What is Assistive technology (AT)?
It is any item, piece of equipment, software program or product system that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.

  • These include a very wide range of technologies and devices such as prosthetics, braces, walkers, special switches, special-purpose computers, screen readers and specialised curricular software. 

Assessment:
The report conducted surveys in 20 countries that indicate that the proportion of the population currently using at least one assistive product ranges from less than 3% to about 70%. 
Key Points:
i.A billion people globally are currently estimated to be in need of AT. This is projected to double by 2050(i.e. likely to rise above 3.5 billion by 2050), with an ageing population and increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
ii.The WHO launched the Priority Assistive Products List in 2018. These include hearing aids, wheelchairs, communication aids, spectacles, artificial limbs, pill organisers, memory aids and other essential items for the elderly and person with disabilities. 
iii.WHO developed a rapid Assistive Technology Assessment (rATA) tool for national representative survey to measure unmet need for AT.
iv.Barriers to access and coverage of AT is 5Ps: People, Products, Provision, Personnel, and Policy

  • ATs should be accessible for those in need, without any hardships or financial implications.

v.Around the world, an estimated 93 million children under the age of 15 are living with some kind of disability. 
Indian Scenario:
i.In India, disadvantaged groups and communities face hardships for affordable quality healthcare. The estimated unmet need of ATs is about 70%. 
ii.ATs handed out in camps or as a part of social service initiatives are often sub-standard and lead to poorer health outcomes.
iii.The 76th round (July-December 2018) of the National Sample Survey (NSS) reported that among persons with disabilities, 21.8% reported receiving any aid/help from the government and another 1.8% cent from other organizations.
iv.The 2011 Indian Census put the national estimate of the disabled at 2.21% of the total population (26.8 million persons).

  • The rural populace has a higher percentage of disabled (75%).

v.The Indian situation is marked by a high percentage decadal change in disabled population (22.4%) during 2001-11 as compared to that for the total population (17.7%).

Kuwait to Build World’s Largest Petroleum Research Centre

Kuwait is set to build the world’s largest petroleum research centre in al-Ahmadi, south of Kuwait City by the end of 2022. The estimated cost of the projects is around USD 120 million. 
The centre will have 28 laboratories and it will develop improved production and refining techniques that can be used by the industry for different applications including the extraction of heavy crude and non-associated gas.

Highlights on BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation; BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting & 7th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting On May 24, 2022, the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) established the “BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation “, bringing a new era of cooperation in the fields of remote sensing satellite observation and data sharing. The joint committee has also held its first virtual meeting.
Aim: To improve cooperation and enable member countries’ space agencies to work together more closely in the domains of remote sensing satellite observation and data sharing.
Operational Feature of The BRICS Joint Committee on Space Cooperation
i.In order to provide support to the economic and social development of the member countries, the joint committee will drive cooperation on the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation.
Through a video conference on May 19, 2022, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar participated virtually in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting 2022, which was hosted by China. Wang Yi, China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister, presided over the meeting.
On May 24, 2022, Meenakshi Lekhi, Minister of State (MoS) for Culture and External Affairs, participated in the 7th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting 2022, which was hosted by the People’s Republic of China and attended by all BRICS Member Nations, via video conference.

RBI reduces minimum networth norm for non-bank BBPOU to Rs 25cr

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) eased norms for non-bank entities to set up BBPOU (Bharat Bill Payment Operating Units) by reducing the net-worth requirement to Rs 25 crore from Rs 100 crore. This will encourage more players in this segment.

  • These guidelines by the apex bank were issued in exercise of its powers conferred under section 10 (2) read with Section 18 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 (Act 51 of 2007).
  • These will immediately come into effect.

Key Points:
i.Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) is an interoperable platform for bill payments. 
ii.Users of BBPS enjoy benefits like standardised bill payment experience, centralised customer grievance redressal mechanism and prescribed customer convenience fee.
iii.This decision of reducing networth has been taken after observing less growth in the number of non-bank BBPOUs as compared  to the BBPS’  increase in the volume of transactions as well as number of onboarded billers.

Moody’s Slashes India’s Growth Forecast To 8.8% For 2022; India’s GDP Growth Expected to Be 8.2-8.5% in FY22: SBI Ecowrap Report

The global rating agency Moody’s, in its Global Macro Outlook 2022-23, has cut down India’s economic growth forecast to 8.8% for the calendar year 2022.
The State Bank of India (SBI) in its latest edition of the research report, Ecowrap, projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth for FY22 to be at 8.2 to 8.5%. It projected Q4FY22 growth at 2.7%.
Moody’s Cuts Down India’s Economic Growth Forecast To 8.8% For 2022
In its latest update to Global Macro Outlook 2022-23, Moody’s, a global integrated risk assessment agency, lowered India’s economic growth forecast to 8.8% for the calendar year 2022 from 9.1% projected in March 2022. It has retained India’s growth forecast at 5.4% for 2023.

  • According to Moody’s, Inflation is projected to be around 6.8% in 2022 and 5.2% in 2023. 

NOTE:

  • The Wholesale Price Index (WPI), or wholesale price-based inflation, reached a record high of 15.08 % in April 2022, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI), or retail inflation, reached a near eight-year high of 7.79 %.
  • To control inflation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently raised the repo rate by 40 basis points to 4.40%.

Key Takeaways from The Outlook:
i.Despite the fact that recovery from the COVID-19 crisis was in full swing, Moody’s cut its growth forecast for G20 economies to 3.1% in 2022, down from 5.9% in 2021.
ii.The high-frequency data for India, according to Moody’s, shows that the momentum from the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021 carried over into the first four months of 2022 due to strong reopening momentum.

  • The investment cycle is intensifying as a result of strong credit growth, an increase in the corporate sector’s investment intentions, and the government’s high budget allocation to capital spending.

iii. It has cautioned that rising crude oil, food, and fertilizer prices will overburden household budgets and spending. It also stated that raising interest rates to tackle energy and food prices will hinder demand recovery.
iv.It has emphasized that the Indian economy is strong enough to sustain solid growth momentum unless global crude oil and food prices rise further.
India’s Growth Forecast by Others:
i.Citing growing inflation and the Russia-Ukraine war, S&P Global Ratings lowered India’s growth forecast for 2022–23 to 7.3% from 7.8% earlier in May 2022.
ii.In April 2022, the World Bank lowered India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecast for 2022–23 to 8% from 8.7%.
iii. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its forecast for India from 9 % to 8.2%.
iv.The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has projected India’s growth at 7.5 %. 
v.Due to unpredictable crude oil prices and supply chain interruptions caused by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the RBI lowered its FY23 forecast to 7.2% from 7.8% in April 2022.
India’s GDP Growth Expected to Be 8.2-8.5% in FY22, 2.7% in Q4 FY22: SBI Ecowrap Report
In its latest edition, the State Bank of India’s (SBI) research report Ecowrap, has projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at 8.2% – 8.5% for FY22. According to the report, Q4FY22 growth is projected to be 2.7%.

  • The report highlighted that the Central Statistics Office (CSO) had forecasted Q4 GDP at Rs. 41.04 lakh crore & FY22 real GDP growth at Rs 147.7 lakh crore, representing a 1.7% increase above pre-pandemic levels.

Sectoral Growth:
i.The sectors that registered better growth include: steel, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), chemicals, IT-Software, auto accessories, paper etc.,
ii.On the other hand, sectors like automobiles, cement, capital goods – electrical appliances, edible oils, and other industries, witnessed top line growth in Q4 FY22 but experienced negative Profit After Tax (PAT) growth when compared to Q4 FY22.

ONGC Becomes 1st E&P Company to Trade Domestic Gas on IGX

On 23rd May 2022, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has become the first exploration and production (E&P) company to trade domestic gas on the Indian Gas Exchange(IGX). The first online trade was made by  Anurag Sharma, ONGC Director (Onshore) & In-charge Marketing on India’s first Automated national level IGX. 

ONGC has traded unspecified volumes from its Krishna Godavari (KG)-DWN-98/2 block, located off the shore of the Godavari Delta on the east coast of India.

Journalist Wesley Morgan has won the 2022 William E. Colby Award

William E. Colby Military Writers’ Award 2022 for military and intelligence writing went to author and American journalist Wesley Morgan. He was conferred with this award for his work The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan’s Pech Valley.It is the 23rd edition of the award.

  • The book “The Hardest Place: The American Military Adrift in Afghanistan’s Pech Valley” is a collection of his reports on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq for The New York Times, the Washington Post and other outlets.

William E. Colby Military Writers’ Award was established in 1999 by the William E. ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS        

Adani buys 50% stake in drone startup General Aeronautics 

Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Ltd, the wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) signed a definitive agreement to acquire 50% stake in Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based startup General Aeronautics Private Ltd. 

  • The acquisition is expected to be completed by July 31, 2022

Key Points:
i.Adani Defence Systems and Technologies will utilize its military drone and AI-Artificial Intelligence/ML-Machine Learning capabilities and work with General Aeronautics for providing end-to-end solutions for domestic agricultural sector.
ii.Incorporated in 2016, General Aeronautics is an end-to-end agri solutions provider. It provides robotic drones and drone-based solutions for crop protection services, crop health, precision farming and yield monitoring using artificial intelligence and analytics for the agricultural sector.
Other Recent Deals in Adani Group:
i.Adani’s joint venture with Israeli firm Elbit Systems was chosen in the first provisional list under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for drones and drone components.
ii.Adani group forayed into healthcare by incorporating Adani Health Ventures Limited  (AHVL) for healthcare-related activities like setting up medical and diagnostic facilities, and research centres.
iii.The Adani family entered into definitive agreements for the acquisition of Switzerland-based Holcim Ltd’s entire stake in two Indian cement companies viz. Ambuja Cements Ltd and ACC Ltd. 
iv.Adani Enterprises also unveiled its plans to acquire a 49% stake in Quintillion Business Media, the parent entity of business news platform BQPrime.
v.India’s largest commercial port operator Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones’  (APSEZ) subsidiary Adani Harbour Services will acquire a 100% stake in third-party marine services provider Ocean Sparkle Ltd.

Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Smt. Anupriya Patel launched the Indian Business Portal – An International Trade Hub for Indian Exporters and Foreign Buyers in New Delhi.
About Indian Business Portal
i.Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) in partnership with GlobalLinker, has designed and developed the “Indian Business Portal” which would serve as an International Trade Hub to connect Indian Exporters with Foreign/Overseas Merchants.

NHA launches revamped Ayushman Bharat Health Account mobile application

The National Health Authority (NHA), the implementing agency of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), has launched the revamped version of Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) mobile application with new User Interface (UI) and added functionalities. 

  • The ABHA application was previously known as ‘National Digital Health Mission (NDHM) Health Records’ application 

New Features:
i.Any individual can create an ABHA address (username@abdm) that can be linked through a randomly generated 14-digit ABHA number.
ii.ABDM compliant health lockers, a provision for self-uploading of physical health records for easy to access digital certificates.

  • Health records such as diagnostic reports, prescriptions, CoWIN vaccination certificates etc, can be stored in digital format with this feature.

iii. Other features of the application – User profile editing, linking and unlinking ABHA number (14 digit) with ABHA address, link health records created at the ABDM compliant health facility.
iv.Other features like login via face authentication/ fingerprint/ biometric and the ability to scan QR code at the counter of the ABDM compliant facility are set to be released soon.
Note – Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PM-JAY) provides a health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakhs per family per year.
About Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM):
Launched in September 2021
Aim – To provide digital health identities for all Indian citizens to help hospitals, insurance firms, and citizens access health records electronically when required.

  • In February 2022, the Union Cabinet approved the national roll-out of Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) with a budget of Rs.1,600 crore for 5 years.

Sela macaque: New Monkey Species named after Arunachal Pradesh’s Sela Pass

A new species of old world monkey was recorded in the Arunachal Pradesh region by a team of experts from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the University of Calcutta. The species was named as Sela macaque ( Macaca selai), after Arunachal’s Sela Pass. Study has revealed that this pass has geographically separated Sela macaque from Arunachal macaque ( Macaca munzala) of Tawang district for approximately two million years.

  • The study on the new species was published in the latest edition(May 2022) of Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution.

Note – Sela pass is situated between Dirang and Tawang towns in western Arunachal Pradesh.
i.The Expert team has conducted ‘Phylogenetics’, a study related to the evolutionary development and diversification of a species or group of organisms, to identify the uniqueness of Sela Macaque.
ii.The Study revealed that Sela macaques are genetically closer to the Arunachal macaques with similar physical characteristics. 
iii. The Species can be differentiated with some distinct morphological traits like, the long tail, pale face and brown coat of the Sela macaque.

World Hunger Day 2022 observed on 28th May

Every year, 28th of May is observed across the globe as World Hunger Day, to highlight the importance of ending hunger. The day is to highlight the significance of the Global Food Crisis, towards finding a sustainable solution towards a hunger-free planet. 

  • World Hunger Day 2022 is observed under the broader theme is #YouthEndingHunger. 

Note – United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (UN-FAO) is set to observe 16th October 2022 as World Food Day, under the theme “Leave NO ONE Behind”.

i.As per the ‘Global Report on Food Crises 2022’ released by Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC), Over 193 million people in 53 countries or territories experienced acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels in 2021.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2022 – May 28 World Menstrual Hygiene Day is annually observed across the globe on 28th May to create awareness about the importance of good menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for all women and girls.
The overall coordinator of the observance of World Menstrual Hygiene Day is WASH United, a German non-profit organisation. 
Background:
i.Menstrual Hygiene Day was initiated by the WASH United in 2013. 
ii.The first ever Menstrual Hygiene Day was observed on 28th May 2014
iii.The day annually coincides with the observance of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health (28th May). 
Why May 28?
The date, May 28, was chosen to observe Menstrual Hygiene Day since it symbolises the menstrual cycle of females. The date 28 signifies the fertility cycle which lasts for 28 days and similarly, May, the 5th month of the year was chosen since an average period lasts for 5 days.
Importance of Menstrual Hygiene:
Hygiene-related practices of women during menstruation are important since poor menstrual hygiene may increase vulnerability to Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI’s).
Key Points:
i.Every month, around 1.8 billion people across the globe menstruate and millions of these girls, women, transgender men and non-binary persons are unable to manage their menstrual cycle in a dignified, healthy way.
ii.The challenges in meeting the menstrual health and hygiene need include Gender inequality, discriminatory social norms, cultural taboos, poverty and lack of basic services like toilets and sanitary products.

Adani Green Energy & Andhra Pradesh signed MoU for 60000 crore investment

Adani Green Energy Limited(AGEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Andhra Pradesh (AP) for an investment of ₹ 60,000 crores in AP. This is a part of the major investment drive of AGEL. 

  • This initiative includes a 3,700 MW hydro storage project and a 10,000 MW solar energy project which will provide direct and indirect job opportunities for about 10,000 people.
  • The MoU was signed by Special Chief Secretary Karikal Valaven on behalf of AP and  Ashish Rajvamshi for the Adani group in the presence of AP Chief Minister(CM) YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Adani Group Chairman Goutam Adani at AP Pavilion at Davos, Switzerland. 

UP Energy Minister Ak Sharma Launches a Portal ‘SAMBHAV’
Uttar Pradesh (UP) Minister for energy and urban development Arvind Kumar Sharma  launched ‘SAMBHAV’ (sambhav.up.gov.in) platform/portal that would monitor the grievances from the public/citizens related to the schemes, programmes and policies of the departments under the ministry.

  • SAMBHAV means Systemic Administration Mechanism for Bringing Happiness and Value.

Key Information
i.SAMBHAV is a multi-modal platform which has been launched to dispose of public grievances swiftly and effectively and provide good governance and make the public service delivery transparent and accountable.
ii. SAMBHAV would serve as an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platform for reporting public complaints to the appropriate officers who would resolve such grievances through their login access.

  • Officers must provide their responses and action taken reports (ATRs) on the topics in question. 
  • For conversation with officials, the portal will also offer videoconferencing and teleconferencing capabilities.

iii.The portal would accept complaints and issues from a variety of sources, including pending cases and grievances filed through the UP Chief Minister’s Jan Sunwai/Integrated Grievance Redressal System (IGRS) system.
