World Hunger Day 2022

Every year, 28th of May is observed across the globe as World Hunger Day, to highlight the importance of ending hunger. The day is to highlight the significance of the Global Food Crisis, towards finding a sustainable solution towards a hunger-free planet. 

i.World Hunger Day 2022 is observed under the broader theme — #YouthEndingHunger. 

  • World Hunger Day 2021 was observed under the theme – “Access Ends Hunger”.

ii.World Hunger Day 2022 is dedicated to pay special attention to the global food crisis and how it impacts youth. 

iii. The increasing hunger rate has led to life-long health challenges like Malnourishment, stunting, and starvation amongst the younger generation. 

iv.Climate Change and global conflicts have worsened the existing global hunger.

Note – United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (UN-FAO) is set to observe 16th October 2022 as World Food Day, under the theme “Leave NO ONE Behind”.

Background:

i.World Hunger Day is an international initiative by ‘The Hunger Project’, a non-profit organisation.

ii.The Day was first observed in 2011, to showcase the global commitment towards ending hunger, and 2022 marks the 12th edition of World Hunger Day.

Note – United Nations under its Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) targets to achieve  ‘Zero Hunger’ by 2030.

Reports Related to Global Hunger:

i.As per the ‘Global Report on Food Crises 2022’ released by Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC), Over 193 million people in 53 countries or territories experienced acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels in 2021.

Recent Related News:

India ranked 101 out of 116 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021 with a score of 27.5. India is behind its neighbours Pakistan (92), Bangladesh (76) and Nepal (76).
