MoR Launches Indian Railway Innovation Policy – StartUps for RailwaysRailway-Ministry-launches-Railway-Innovation-Policy

On 13th June 2022 the Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw launched Indian Railway Innovation Policy – StartUps for Railways’ and also an ‘Indian Railway Innovation Portal’ in Rail Bhavan, New Delhi.

  • Aim – To leverage innovative technologies developed by Indian Startups/MSMEs/Innovators/Entrepreneurs to improve operational efficiency and Safety of Indian Railways
  • Problems like rail fracture, headway reduction etc. have been taken up for phase 1 of this program which will be presented before the start ups to find innovative solutions.

Features of Innovation Policy
i.Indian Railways ensures for 50 percent, up to Rs. 1.5 Crore capital grant on equal basis in milestone payment , assured market, scale and ecosystem
ii.The Complete process will be transparent & objective right from identifying the problem statement to development of prototype with defined timeline.

  • Trials of prototypes will be done in Railways and further, enhanced funding will be provided to scale up deployment on successful performance of prototypes.

iii.Selection of Innovators will be through an online portal (www.innovation.indianrailways.gov.in) for transparency.
iv.The Developed Intellectual property rights (IPR) will remain with innovators only.
Other facts
i.In May 2022, when field units were asked to provide Problem Areas, around 160 problem statements have been received till date.

  • Out of which, 11 problem statements have been identified and could be dealt through new Innovation Policy and uploaded on the portal.

ii.Problem areas: The problems include Broken Rail Detection System, Rail Stress Monitoring System, Headway Improvement System for suburban section, Automation of Track Inspection Activities, Design of superior Elastomeric Pad (EM Pad) for Heavy Haul freight Wagons, Development of on-line Condition Monitoring System for traction motors of 3-phase Electric Locomotives, Light-weight wagon for transporting commodities like Salt, Development of analytical tool by using digital data for improving passenger services, Track Cleaning Machine, App for post-training revision & self-service refresher courses, Use of Remote Sensing, Geomatics and Graphical interface System (GIS) for bridge inspection.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Launches National Aero Sports Policy 2022The National Air Sports Policy 2022 (NASP 2022) was launched by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), with the aim of optimizing India’s potential in the field of air sports.
By 2030, the NASP 2022 aims to make India one of the top sports nations in the world by providing a safe, affordable, accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable air sports ecosystem.
i.The NASP 2022 is a first step toward realising India’s potential in the field of aviation.
ii.It is drafted with inputs from policymakers, practitioners, and the general public in mind, and it ensures the establishment of high-quality infrastructure, equipment, instructors, and services.

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh Releases 2nd edition of NeSDA 2021

Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State(MoS) Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions released the 2nd edition “National e-Governance Service Delivery Assessment 2021(NeSDA 2021): Reaching citizens through seamless service delivery” prepared by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions.

  • NeSDA is a biennial study that provides suggestions for the government to enhance its e-governance service delivery system.

About NeSDA:
i.The NeSDA was constituted by the DARPG in 2019 as a part of its mandate to enhance the e-government endeavours and drive digital government excellence.
ii.The next edition of NeSDA will be conducted in 2023.
Highlights:

  • Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has topped among UTs in e-Governance services delivery.
  • Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh had a compliance of more than 85% among the remaining states category.
  • Kerala has secured the highest overall compliance score among all the States and UTs.

Cabinet Committee on Security Approved New Scheme ‘Agnipath’ for Soldier Recruitment

Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the new scheme called “Agneepath(Agnipath) for recruitment of soldiers in the Army, Navy and Air Force. This aims to reduce the increasing salary and pensions.  This is a transformative initiative which will provide a youthful profile to the Indian Armed Forces.

  • At present, the average age in the force is 32 years, this will be reduced to 26 in 6 to 7 years.
  • The scheme was initially named as ”Tour of Duty”, was launched in the presence of the chiefs of all the three services.

PM Narendra Modi Inaugurated Iconic Week Celebrations of FinMin & MCA- June 6-12, 2022

i.As a part of the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM)’, an Iconic Week Celebrations of the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) were held from June 6-12, 2022, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi.The event held under the theme of “Transforming Lives”.
ii.The PM Narendra Modi launched Jan Samarth Portal, a first of its kind platform to directly connect beneficiaries to lenders. It provides single window facility for 13 Government Schemes application submission and 125+ Member Lending Institutions-MLIs (including all Public Sector Banks) to choose from.
iii.The PM also launched a special series of coins of Re 1, Rs 2, 5, 10 and 20 denominations having AKAM design. They are not commemorative coins and will be part of circulation.
iv.The Union Finance Minister also launched NETRA (New e-Tracking and Remote Administration) portal, and Mobile Application for Indian Development and Economic Assistance Scheme (IDEAS).
v.On June 8, 2022, Indian Customs under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) observed ‘Drug Destruction Day’ across India as a part of AKAM during which 42054.104 kgs kilograms of narcotics were destroyed which includes 17,108,45 tablets, 72757 bottles of cough syrup, and 16,336 vials of injections.

Indian Navy Conducts 38th Coordinated Patrol with Indonesian Navy

On 13th June 2022, the 38th India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) between the Indian Navy (IN) Units of Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) and Indonesian Navy have been started in the Andaman Sea and Straits of Malacca which takes place till 24th June 2022.

  • The 38th CORPAT is the first post pandemic Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) between India and Indonesia.

Key Highlights
i.It includes a visit by the Indonesian Navy units to ANC at Port Blair from 13th – 15th June 2022 followed by a Sea Phase in the Andaman Sea and visit by IN Units to Sabang (Indonesia) from 23rd – 24th June 2022.
ii.According to Government of India’s vision of Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), Naval Component under the aegis of Head Quarters (HQ) ANC undertakes coordinated patrols with other littoral countries of the Andaman Sea along respective Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) towards enhancing regional maritime security.
About CORPAT
i.The CORPAT have been carried out along their International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) since 2002.
ii.This helps in understanding and interoperability between both the Navies and has facilitates measures to prevent and suppress Illegal Unreported Unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery and piracy.

PM Modi Inaugurates Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 in New Delhi; Launched Biotech products & e-Portal

On 9th June 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, Delhi. Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 is a 2-day event held on 9th & 10th June 2022, organised by the Department of Biotechnology and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).

  • The expo is a part of the celebration of the completion of 10 years of the establishment of BIRAC. The celebration recognises the efforts of BIRAC toward the biotech sector of India.

The theme of Biotech Startup Expo – 2022 is “Biotech Startup Innovations: Towards AatmaNirbhar Bharat”.
The future trajectory of the Bio-economy in the Biotech sector is to achieve USD 150 billion by 2025 and India as a USD 100 Billion Bio-manufacturing Hub.

Russia Overtakes Saudi Arabia to Become India’s 2nd Biggest Oil SupplierRussia has overtaken Saudi Arabia to become India’s 2nd-biggest oil supplier next to Iraq, as Russian crude is currently available at discount following the war in Ukraine.

  • Indian refiners have bought Russian crude oil at discount as high as USD 30 per barrel.
  • Iraq was the top supplier to India and Saudi Arabia stands 3rd biggest supplier to India.
  • Note – India is the world’s 3rd biggest oil-importing and consuming nation after the United States (US) and China.

Key Points:
i.In May 2022, The Indian refiners bought about 25 million barrels of Russian oil or more than 16 percent of all their oil imports.
ii.The share of African oil in India’s crude oil imports rose to 11.5% from 5.9% in April last month.
iii.Higher oil imports from Russia curbed India’s overall imports of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries)’s share to 65% in April.
iv.For the 1st time, Russian-origin crude hit 5 percent of India’s total seaborne imports in April, rising from under 1% throughout 2021 and Q1 2022.

Rajnath Singh’s 3-day visit to Vietnam – Strengthens Defence Cooperation

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh went on a 3-day official visit to Vietnam from 8th June 2022, at the invitation of Vietnam’s Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang.

  • The visit marks 50 years of establishment of India-Vietnam Diplomatic relations and 75 years of India’s Independence.
  • Vietnam is an important partner in India’s Act East policy and the Indo-Pacific vision.

Agenda of the visit
i.Rajnath Singh will hold bilateral talks with General Phan Van Giang for defence cooperation.
ii.He will hand over 12 High Speed Guard Boats constructed under the Government of India to Vietnam at the Hong Ha Shipyard in Hai Phong, Vietnam.

  • The initial 5 boats were built in the Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Shipyard in India and the other 7 in Hong Ha Shipyard in Vietnam.

iii.He will also visit the training institutions of Vietnam at Nha Trang, including the Telecommunication University.

HSBC India Announces USD 250 Million Lending Support for Indian Start-Ups 

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, India (HSBC India), a retail banking and financial services provider, has announced USD 250 million in lending support for high-growth, technology-led start-ups in India, which has the world’s third largest start-up ecosystem.

  • HSBC will administer the lending via its commercial banking division. It has also not mentioned any specific timeframe for disbursal of the amount.

The lending assistance comes at a time when local financial intermediaries’ debt demands for start-ups have increased due to a ‘funding winter’ impacting equity funding in the sector.
Key Points:
i.HSBC has designed a credit model and services to meet the specific needs of a wide spectrum of start-ups and new-age entities, spanning from growth stage to unicorns, and the loans will be for growth stage companies.
ii.The profit of HSBC’s commercial banking vertical in India registered a growth of 42% to USD 265 million in 2021, compared to USD 187 million in 2020.
iii. In addition, compared to USD 300 million in 2018, the lender’s loans to small and medium businesses have more than tripled to around USD 1 billion.

Indian Bank Launches Digital KCC Renewal Scheme for Credit Card Holders

On 13th June 2022 Indian Bank (IB) launched Kisan Credit Card (KCC) digital renewal scheme for renewal of KCC accounts by customers themselves through IB’s IndOASIS mobile app, internet banking portal and IB’s website and also through Message for feature phone users. This is launched currently for customers having outstanding loans of Rs.1.60 Lakh as a part of IB’s digital transformation under project World of Advanced Virtual Experience (WAVE).

Adani & TotalEnergies to Jointly Create World’s Largest Green Hydrogen Ecosystem

Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) and TotalEnergies of France have formed a strategic alliance to build the world’s largest green hydrogen ecosystem.

  • TotalEnergies would invest at least USD 12.5 billion to acquire a 25% minority interest in Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL) from AEL as part of this partnership.
  • AEL and TotalEnergies will use ANIL as their exclusive platform for the production and commercialization of green hydrogen in India.

France’s TotalEnergies is one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies. It already owns a 37.4% stake in Adani Total Gas Ltd.
Key Points:
i. With this investment in ANIL, the strategic alliance now includes Liquefied natural gas (LNG)terminals, gas utility business, renewables business, and green hydrogen generation, totalling 4 partnerships between themtill now.
ii.Over the next ten years, ANIL plans to invest more than USD 50 billion on green hydrogen and associated ecosystems.

  • Before 2030, ANIL will build a green hydrogen production capacity of 1 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), backed by about 30 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable power generation capacity.

iii. This collaboration will reinforce TotalEnergies and Adani’s public ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitments to the energy transition.

  • It is expected to transform India’s and the world’s energy landscapes, assisting India in decarbonizing its mobility, industry, and agriculture while also contributing to the country’s energy independence.

iv.Gautam Adani, Chairman of Adani Group, declared in September 2021 that Adani Enterprises will invest USD 20 billion (Rs 1.48 trillion) in the renewable energy supply chain over the next ten years, including power generation, manufacturing, transmission, and distribution.
Note: In 2021, Reliance Industries, operator of the world’s biggest refining complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat, announced an investment of USD 10.1 billion in clean energy over three years in order to become a net carbon-zero firm by 2035.

World Blood Donor Day 2022 – June 14 

World Blood Donor Day(WBDD) is annually observed across the globe on 14th June to create awareness about the importance of blood donation and to promote voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation.
The day also aims to create awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products like Red blood cells (RBCs), Fresh frozen plasma, White blood cells (WBCs), Immune globulins, etc.

  • The observance of WBDD is led by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Host of WBDD 2022 events: The WBDD 2022 is hosted by Mexico through its National Blood Centre.
The theme/slogan of WBDD 2022 is “Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives”.

Tamil Nadu CM Launches Ennum Ezhuthum scheme to Fill Learning Gap

On 13th June 2022 Tamil Nadu (TN) Chief Minister (CM) Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin (MK Stalin) launched the ‘Ennum Ezhuthum scheme’ at an event in Azhinjivakkam panchayat union middle school, Tiruvallur, TN to bridge the learning gap occurred due to COVID-19 pandemic among students aged below 8.

  • Aim – To ensure foundational literacy and numeracy by 2025.

About the scheme
i.The education department will distribute workbooks to students from Classes 1 to 3 to assess and bridge the learning gap.
ii.Under the scheme, a high level committee has been formed to help each child individually.
iii.The children will be trained in 3 subjects – Tamil, English and Mathematics in a classroom suitable for conducting lessons that are designed in the format of dance, songs, storytelling and puppetry and also videos.
Efforts taken
i.Recently, a special training programme was conducted for teachers where they were advised to opt for interactive learning methods and also encourage students to read newspapers and books in the school library.
ii.The TN government has announced a few programmes and schemes for the academic year 2022-23, with an aim to improve the quality of education in TN.
iii.CM had already announced a free breakfast scheme for primary school children and a nutrition scheme for malnourished children.

  • He also announced Rs 1,000 incentive for girl students pursuing higher education.

Haryana CM Launches Pilot Project to Conserve Water

On 13th June 2022 Haryana Chief Minister (CM) Manohar Lal Khattar launched a pilot project theSujalinitiative for Panchkula to monitor the water supply and control its flow in the region. Under the initiative, a device will be installed in every drinking water metre, tube well and connections of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) that will store the water usage data online in a single dashboard and thus it is easy to estimate the flow of water in every house.
