5th India-Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise JIMEX 2021 held at Arabian Sea

5th edition of the India-Japan Maritime Bilateral ExerciseThe 5th edition of India-Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, ‘JIMEX 2021’ between Indian Navy (IN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) is being held in Arabian Sea from October 6-8, 2021.

  • It was initiated in January 2012 for maritime security cooperation.

Representation:

IN:

It is represented by indigenously built INS (Indian Naval Ship) Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, under the command of Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet (FOCWF).

i.INS Kochi is the second ship of the Kolkata-class stealth guided-missile destroyers built under the code name Project 15A. It was constructed by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.

ii.INS Teg is the fourth Talwar-class frigate built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia and was commissioned to Navy service on 27 April 2012.

iii.Apart from ships, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, integral helicopters and MiG 29K fighter aircraft are also participating in the exercise.

 JMSDF:

Japan is represented by JMSDF ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Carrier and Murasame, a Guided Missile Destroyer, led by Rear Admiral IkeuchiIzuru, Commander Escort Flotila – 3 (CCF-3).

Objective:

To develop common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability in maritime security cooperation

Points to be noted:

i.JIMEX 2021 involves multi-faceted tactical exercises like weapon firings, cross-deck helicopter operations and complex surface, anti-submarine and air warfare drills.

ii.Apart from JIMEX, India-Japan also conducts Dharma Guardian Military Exercise between the armies of both countries.

  • Indian Air Force (IAF) and JASDF carry out a joint military air force exercise named ‘Shinyuu Maitri’.
  • They are also involved in a Quad Maritime Exercise called Malabar with the US (United States) and Australia.

Recent Related News:

On August 18, 2021 India and Vietnam had conducted a Bilateral maritime exercise in the South China Sea as a part of maritime cooperation between the two countries. Participants- India was represented by INS Ranvijay and INS Kora & Vietnam was represented by Vietnam’s People’s Navy (VPN) frigate VPNS Ly Thai To(HQ-012)
