1st ever Cannabis Medicine Project to be Set up with Collaboration of Canada at Jammu: Jitendra Singh

First ever cannabis medicine project coming up in JammuJitendra Singh, Union Minister of State-MoS (Independent Charge), Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space informed that 1st ever cannabis medicine project will be shortly set up with the collaboration of Canada at Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) in Jammu.

  • The progress of the construction of North India’s 1st biotech industrial park in Kathua, Jammu & Kashmir was also reviewed by Jitendra Singh

Note– Through the CSIR, Union Ministry of Science and Technology few other projects are also being set up in Jammu.

Shekhar Mande, Director General of CSIR; Rajiv Bhatanagar, Advisor to Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir; Dr. D Srinivasa Reddy, Director of IIIM, Jammu attended the review meeting through video conferencing.

Points to be Noted

i.Special permission is yet to be obtained to  produce the pain-relief medicine for patients who are suffering from cancer, diabetes, etc.,  using cannabis, which is otherwise prohibited to use because of narcotic drug abuse.

ii.The medicine that is prepared from this plant can be used for export.

Biotech Industrial Park

i.The deadline to complete the project has been delayed due to COVID-19 and the new deadline will be around February 2021.

iii.The neighbouring states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh can also avail the benefits of the park

  • The 1st ever seed processing plant is almost ready in Kathua, J&K. 
  • The Biotech  industrial Park and the seed processing plant will supplement each other’s resources. 
  • This will be in accordance with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to double the farmers’ income.
  • The projects will promote economic development and also quality export projects.

Lemon grass cultivation project

i.On Jitendra Singh’s personal intervention, CSIR had launched a lemon grass cultivation project. 

ii.Currently this cultivation is undertaken in districts of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar.
