World Milk Day 2021 – June 1

World Milk DayWorld Milk Day is annually observed across the globe on June 1 to create awareness about milk and to highlight the importance of milk and dairy products as a global food.

The day aims to celebrate the dairy sector across the globe and to promote the activities connected with the milk and milk industry.

  • The theme of World Milk Day 2021 focuses on Sustainability in the dairy sector with messages around the environment, nutrition and socio-economics.

Background:

i.World Milk Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations(UN) in 2001.

ii.The first world Milk Day was observed on 1st June 2001. 

Why June 1?

June 1 was chosen as the world milk day because various member countries were already celebrating a national milk day on or around June 1.

Events 2021:

As a part of the Celebration of World Milk Day 2021, the Enjoy Dairy Rally was conducted from 29th to 31st May 2021.

White Revolution of India:

i.The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) designed a dairy development programme in 1969 to lay the foundation for viable, self-supportive dairy industry in India.

ii.The Operation flood was launched in July 1970 with technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

iii.The Operation Flood led to the White Revolution, which created a national milk grid that connected the milk producers across India.

iv.Dr Verghese Kurien is known as the “Father of White Revolution”.
