Winners of Sahitya Akademi Awards 2022; Anuradha Roy; M. Rajendran; Badri Narayan among winners

Sahitya Akademi Awards announced, Anuradha Roy among 23 winnersOn 22nd December 2022, the Sahitya Akademi announced the winners of Sahitya Akademi Awards 2022, the annual award that recognises the literary works in 24 Indian languages(including English).

  • Novelist Anuradha Roy, Tamil author M. Rajendran, Telugu writer Madhuranthakam Narendra and Sanskrit Poet Janardan Prasad Pandey ‘Mani’ were among 23 litterateurs awarded the Sahitya Akademi Awards for 2022.

The executive board of the Sahitya Akademi under the Chairmanship of Dr Chandrashekhar has also approved the winners of

  • Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2022,
  • Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman 2022
  • Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2022
  • Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2022

The awards will be presented to the winners at the award presentation function which will be held at a later date.

About Sahitya Akademi: 

i.Sahitya Akademi established in 1954 by the government of India is India’s National Academy of Letters.

ii.The academy preserves and promotes the literature contained in 24 Indian languages through Awards, Fellowships, Grants, publications and others.

Sahitya Akademi Awards: 

i.Sahitya Akademi Awards was established in 1954.

ii.The annual literary award presented by Sahitya Akademi recognises the writers of the most outstanding books first published during 5 years immediately preceding the year of award (between 1st January 2016 and 31st December 2020).

iii.The Award is in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

iv.The awards recognise the works under various categories such as Poetry, Short Stories, Novel, Play/Drama, Literary criticism, Autobiographical Essays, Collections of Articles and Literary History.

Sahitya Akademi Awards 2022:

i.The 2022 winners of the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2022 includes 7 books of poetry, 6 novel, 2 short stories, 3 dramas/plays, 2 literary criticism and 1 each under autobiographical essays, a collection of articles and literary history.

ii.The winners of the awards are recommended by the jury members in 23 Indian languages and were approved by the executive board of the Sahitya Akademi under the Chairmanship of Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar, President of Sahitya Akademi.

Note: The winner of the award for the Bengali language is yet to be announced.

Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2022: 

A total of 17 books were selected for the Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2022.

The award recognises the translations first published during the 5 years prior to the award year.

The prize carries a cash award of Rs 50000 and a copper plaque.

Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman 2022:

Dr Udaya Nath Jha, professor and head of Sahitya Department of Central Sanskrit University, Puri, Odisha has been approved as the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman 2022 in recognition of his contribution in the field of Classical and Medieval Literature in the Eastern region.

  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, an inscribed copper plaque and a citation.

About Dr Udaya Nath Jha: 

i.Dr Udaya Nath Jha has authored 26 books in Maithili, Hindi, and Sanskrit and translated and edited around 27 books.

ii.He has also published 471 articles, stories, research papers and essays in various recognised journals.

Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2022 

i.A total of 23 writers were selected for the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2022

ii.The award carries an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50000.

iii.The Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar was established in 2011 to recognise young writers aged 35 years and below, with the aim to encourage and promote young writers.

Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2022: 

i.A total of 22 writers has been approved for the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2022.

ii.The award in the Santali language will be announced later and for 2022 there is no award in the Punjabi language.

iii.The award includes a casket with an engraved copper plaque and a cheque of Rs 50000.

iv.The award established in 2010 recognises the writer’s contribution to children’s literature targeting the readership of children aged 9 to 16.
