University of Delhi ranked 220th on QS World University Ranking for Sustainability 2024; University of Toronto tops

Delhi University (DU) has been ranked 220th globallyAccording to the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, the 2nd edition of the list published by Quacquarelli Symonds(QS), a global higher education analyst, the University of Delhi (DU), ranked 220th (globally), has topped among the 56 Indian Universities featured on the list.

  • DU is ranked 30th among Asian Universities.
  • The University of Toronto, Canada, has topped the list as the world’s most sustainable University, followed by the University of California (UCB), Berkeley, the United States of America(USA) at 2nd and the University of Manchester, the United Kingdom (UK) at 3rd place.

About 2024 ranking:

The 2024 ranking features a total of 1,397 institutions representing 95 countries and territories.

Assessment:

The QS methodology includes three performance categories:

  • Environmental Impact(45%) – includes 3 Indicators: Environmental Sustainability, Environmental Education and Environmental Research
  • Social Impact(45%) – includes 5 Indicators: Equality, Knowledge Exchange, Impact of Education, Employability & Outcomes and Health & Wellbeing
  • Governance(10%) – includes indicators related to good governance such as ethics, hiring practices, transparency and decision making.

ii.IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Roorkee are ranked among top 400 globally.

iii.DU has score 91.8 under the indicator Environmental Education.

iv.In the Environmental Sustainability indicator, 4 Indian universities have featured among top 100. Vellore Institute of Technology(VIT) is ranked 49th(globally) in the category and ranked 10th in Asia.

v.IIT Delhi leads environmental research at 236th, focusing on Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

vi.Manipal Academy (111th) and University of Delhi (167th) are among the top 200 in Good Governance.

Global Scenario:

i.The US dominates the ranking with 209 ranked universities, the UK follows with 93, and China with 90.

ii.A total of four Asian universities rank among the world’s top 50.

University of Tokyo, Japan ranked 22nd (Overall) has topped among the Asian universities followed by the National University of Singapore, Singapore (26th); Seoul National University, South Korea (46th) and the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (50th).

i.The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), an agency of the United Nations, published the 16th edition of the Global Innovation Index (2023). India retains 40th rank among 132 economies. Switzerland secured the top spot in the rankings.

ii.According to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index (August 2023 edition) India is ranked 47th among 145 countries with median download speed of 50.21 Mbps(Megabits per second). India has moved up 72 places, from 119th place in 2022 to the 47th position in 2023.
