Union Ministers Jointly Launched Unified Portal of Gobardhan to Promote GOBAR-DHAN Scheme

Jal Shakti Ministry launch Unified Portal of GobardhanOn February 3, 2021 Union Ministers jointly launched a ‘Unified Portal of Gobardhanto promote  ‘Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan’ (GOBAR-DHAN) scheme, an initiative that aims to manage cattle and biodegradable waste and also help enhance farmers’ income. The portal also helps to track real time progress of the scheme.

  • During the launch, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan said the Gobardhan scheme will provide farmers an alternative income of at least Rs 1 lakh crore in the next five years.
  • The Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBAR-DHAN) scheme is implemented under the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin-Phase 2, by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Jal Shakti ministry.

The unified portal was launched by Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development; Dharmendra Pradhan,  Union Minister of Petroleum,Natural Gas and Steel; Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying; Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Union Minister of State, Jal Shakti, Shri Rattan Lal Kataria.

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE):

  • Biogas power generation (Off – Grid) and Thermal energy application programme (BPGTP)

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG):

  • Biofuel Policy & Sustainable Alternative towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT)

– The department is under Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying

– It offers various Cooperative schemes through National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)

Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare

  • It is under Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare
  • It offers Agriculture Infrastructure Fund- AIF under the National Agriculture Infra Financing Facility

Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation

  • Implements two flagship programmes of Indian government  – Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and SBMG Phase II.

About GOBAR-DHAN Scheme:

Announced– The scheme was announced in February 2018.

Ministry– It is under the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation.

  • The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation will assist each district with technical know-how and financial support of Rs 50 lakh for achieving safe management of cattle and biodegradable waste in rural areas while converting it into income for farmers and preventing disease by maintaining sanitation.

Purpose– To ensure cleanliness in villages by converting bio-waste including cattle waste, kitchen leftovers, crop residue and market waste to enhance the lives of villagers.

Significance– The scheme is an priority programme under SBMG Phase II.The scheme aims to augment income of farmers by converting biodegradable waste into compressed biogas (CBG).

Beneficiaries– It will offer economic and resource benefits to farmers and households. It will also benefit rural people and women in particular.

Benefit– It will support biodegradable waste recovery and conversion of waste into resources, among others.
