Union Minister of Fisheries, Parshottam Rupala Initiated ‘Sagar Parikrama’ at Gujarat

Union Fisheries Minister Parshottam Rupala inaugurates ‘Sagar Parikrama’

On 5th March 2022, the Union Ministry for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying , Parshottam Rupala inaugurated the ‘Sagar Parikrama’, an initiative to solve the concerns of the fishermen community in Gujarat. 

i.Sagar Parikrama was flagged from the freedom fighter Shyamiji Krishna Varma Memorial at Mandvi, Gujarat, on the first day it reached Okha in Devbhumi Dwarka district, Gujarat and the first leg of Sagar Parikrama will end at Porbandar, Gujarat.

ii.Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Hovercraft is on board for the Parikrama.

Aim:

i. The Parikrama aims to understand challenges, experiences and aspirations of the fishermen community and to solve the concerns of the fishermen.

ii.The initiative looks at the scope of seafood exports as the Country has a coastline of 8118 kms.

iii.It covers 9 maritime States/4UTs and provides livelihood support to millions of coastal fisher folk as a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava’.

About Sagar Parikrama:

i.The Parikrama was organised by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), Government of India and National Fisheries Development Board along with Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat, Indian Coast Guard, Fishery Survey of India, Gujarat Maritime Board and fishermen representatives.

ii.Gujarat marks as the first state as part of Parikrama initiative.

iii.The proposed sea route will be Gujarat, Diu, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands.

iv.It provides the arena for development issues such as livelihoods, climate change, commerce, and security.

Schemes From Sagar Parikrama:

i.Kisan credit card (KCC) will also be made available for fisherfolks and people involved in animal husbandry.

ii.The certificates /sanctions related to Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampadha scheme (PMMSY) and state scheme such as Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development fund (FIDF) has been awarded to the progressive fishermen, coastal fishermen, fishers and fish farmers, young fishery entrepreneurs

On December 13, 2021, the 2nd edition of ‘Animal Husbandry Startup Grand Challenge’ or ‘Animal Husbandry  Startup Grand Challenge 2.0’ was launched by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), in  partnership with Startup India. 

  • It was launched by Union Minister Parshottam Rupala, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAHD) during an event celebrating ‘National Milk Day’ in Anand, Gujarat to commemorate the birth centenary of Dr. Varghese Kurien.
