Union Government approved India’s Membership of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program

Union Government signed the Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for geosciences which is government funded and Public Law Foundation of the State of Brandenburg, Germany.

Validity of Membership: 5 yearsicdp

India occupied globally eminent exports with great features of scientific drilling by achieving deep drilling and associated investigations in Koyna region

India will assign a position on two ICDP panels

  • Executive Committee (EC)
  • Assembly of Governors (AOG)

Features of ICDP:

  • Deliver technical support
  • Smoothening capacity building in terms of manpower training in key scientific areas
  • Sample and data management
  • Support workshops for the koyna scientific deep drilling project
  • It is undertaken by Ministry of Earth Sciences

Advantages of ICDP over India:

  • Scientists/ Engineers from India having right to submit their proposal as a member of ICDP
  • Actively participate in all ICDP co-funded workshops and drilling projects
  • Accessing all data results from ICDP projects
  • It provides clear understanding about the genesis of seismicity and earthquake processes

About ICDP:

  • A multinational program to fund geosciences in the field of Continental Scientific Drilling which is a critical tool in understanding of Earth processes and structure
  • It provides knowledge about Earth processes and critically tests geological models.
  • Headquarter: The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences
