The 136th edition of The Wimbledon Championships (Wimbledon) 2023 took place from 26th June to 16th July 2023, the Gentlemen’s Singles was won by Carlos Alcaraz of Spain defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia at the centre court, All England lawn tennis and croquet club, Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom.
About Wimbledon:
- Wimbledon was established in 1877 and organised by the All England Lawn Tennis and Crouquet Club (AELTC)& International Tennis Federation.
- The 2023 Championships is the 129th staging of the Ladies’ Singles Championship event, the 55th in the Open Era and the 3rd Grand Slam tournament of the year.
- It is one of the 4 Grand Slam tennis tournaments (others being Australian Open, French Open and the United States(US) open)that takes place in Grass Outdoor Courts and every player must follow the dress-code of whites.

Gentlemen’s Singles:
Carlos Alcaraz(ATP-Association of Tennis Professionals Rank 1) defeated seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic(ATP Rank 2) to claim his first Wimbledon title(2023) at the Gentlemen’s singles final match.
- For Carlos it was a second major following his US Open title 2022 as he became Wimbledon’s third youngest men’s champion.
- For Djokovic it was his ninth final at Wimbledon and 35th at the majors. He also was kept from claiming his 24th career major.
Ladies Singles:
Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded Women’s Singles champion at Wimbledon in the Open Era after defeating Ons Jabeur (WTA- Women’s Tennis Association Rank 6)of Tunisia in the Ladies singles final.
- She was the first unseeded woman to even reach the final at the All England Club in 60 years.
Marketa Vondrousova:
i.This is Vondrousova’s first Grand Slam title.
ii.She was the second-lowest ranked player to reach the Wimbledon final — only Serena Williams in 2018 was lower at 181.
iii.Since the beginning of the Open era (1968), Vondrousova is the 24th different woman who has lifted the Venus Rosewater Dish.
iv.The 24-year-old left-handed is the third player from the Czech Republic to win the title after Jana Novotna (1998) and Petra Kvitova (2011, 2014).
Note: Ons Jabeur(28) from Tunisia is the only Arab woman and only North African woman to make it that far in singles at any Grand Slam tournament.
Gentlemen’s Doubles:
Neal Skupski(United Kingdom) and Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof won the Wimbledon Gentlemen’s doubles title against the duo Marcel Granollers(Spain) and Horacio Zeballos (Argentina).
Key points:
i.This will be Skupski first grand slam title in the men’s doubles.
ii.Neal Skupski is into his third Wimbledon men’s doubles final in a row
iii.Neal Skupski became the second British player in the Open era to win the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon
iv.He is also the first British man to win both the mixed doubles and Gentlemen’s doubles at the All England Club since Leslie Godfree in 1926.
v.Skupski has two mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon together with Desirae Krawczyk, in 2021 and 2022.
Ladies doubles:
Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan and Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic won their second Wimbledon Ladies doubles title as a pairing by beating Elise Mertens of Belgium and Storm Hunter of Australia.
- Taiwanese Hsieh and Czech Strycova won their first Wimbledon title together in 2019.
i.Hsieh is now a four-time Wimbledon doubles champion, having also won alongside Belgium’s Mertens in 2021 and Peng Shuai of China in 2013.
ii.Elise Mertens was looking for her fourth Grand Slam title overall, while Storm Hunter was trying to win her first.
Mixed Doubles:
In the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles final Mate Pavic of Croatia, with teammate Lyudmyla Kichenok(Ukraine) against Joran Vliegen of Belgium and his teammate Xu Yifan of China.
Key points:
i.Pavic has also won three men’s doubles championships, including Wimbledon in 2021.
ii.This would be Pavic’s sixth Grand Slam championship.
iii.Kichenok became the third Ukrainian to win a Grand Slam title and the first to win Wimbledon.

Records by Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon 2023
i.Novak Djokovic joins Serena Williams(United States of America) and Roger Federer(Switzerland) as the only players in tennis history to win at least 350 Grand Slam matches. Williams has 367 and Federer has 369.
ii.Novak Djokovic contests his 100th Wimbledon match against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.
iii.Novak Djokovic tied Roger Federer’s record, entering 46 men’s Grand Slam semifinals by defeating Andrey Rublev(Russia).
Justine Henin receives the Philippe Chatrier Award from ITF:
On 8th July 2023, former world No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin(Belgium) has been honoured with the Philippe Chatrier Award, the highest recognition from the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
- The Belgian was presented with the accolade at the 2023 ITF World Champions Awards presented by UNIQLO, a Japanese textile Manufacturer, took place at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, United Kingdom.
- ITF President is David Haggerty.
Key points:
i.Henin won seven Grand Slam singles titles, an Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games and was part of Belgium’s team that won the Fed Cup (Billie Jean King Cup) in 2001.
ii.The 41-year-old Henin has established a successful academy in Belgium and a charitable foundation that helps provide sporting opportunities for children with disabilities.
Note: The Philippe Chatrier Award, named after the former ITF president, was introduced in 1996 and recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the sport on and off the court.
