Tata Steel, CSIR sign MoU to collaborate in CCUS 

On September 28, 2020 Tata Steel and Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together in the areas of Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS). Both sides have signed the MoU to meet India’s growing energy demands and to build a strong ecosystem to meet commitments under the Paris Agreement. 

i.CCUS plays a vital part in India’s fight against Climate Change and Global Warming. 

Key Points:

i.The Teams from Tata Steel and CSIR will work for accelerating development and deployment of CCUS Technologies in the Steel industry. 

ii.It will accelerate decarbonisation in carbon intensive sectors such as Power, Cement and Fertilizer.

iii.The collaboration will involve works across key areas of CO2 (Carbon dioxide) capture, utilization and storage.

iv.Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Director NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) will lead the CSIR team, while Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President, Technology & New Materials Business, Tata Steel will lead the team from Tata Steel.   

Centre of Excellence:

i.CSIR is initiating steps to set up an “Centre of Excellence” (CoE) on CCUS at NEERI, Nagpur. 

ii.The CoE will offer a common platform to organisations to participate, invest and contribute towards research, deployment, training and capacity building in the field of CCUS through partnership model.
