Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami Inaugurates AIIRLAS, Asia’s Largest Cattle Park in Salem

Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurates Asia’s largest Livestock Research Centre in SalemOn February 22, 2021 Tamil Nadu Chief Minister(CM) Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurated Asia’s biggest cattle park, Advanced Institute for Integrated Research on Livestock and Animal Sciences (AIIRLAS) in Thalaivasal, Salem district. It was constructed at a cost of Rs 1,023 crore. It is the state’s 5th veterinary college.

i.In addition to this he also inaugurated a veterinary medical college and Thalaivasal revenue taluk office.

ii.On the occasion, he also announced that a frozen semen station will be set up in Karumandurai, Salem  at the cost of Rs 100 crore.

Gist about AIIRLAS

i.AIIRLAS  is spread over 1,100 acres and has 20 buildings

ii.Water connection for the cattle park has been provided by extracting 10 mlt water from the Cauvery river at Poolampatti, Salem at a cost of about Rs 700 crore.

Frozen semen station

i.In foreign countries, the exotic breeds of cows give 60 liters of milk per day. But India’s exotic breeds give only 15 litres of milk.

ii.In a bid to help farmers to get more milk from the existing exotic breed, the state govt will set up a frozen semen station.

iii.This will develop high milk yielding indigenous and crossbred cows.

Note:

The 6th and 7th veterinary colleges of the state will be inaugurated in Theni and Udumalaipet (Tiruppur), respectively.
