Sustainable Gastronomy Day 2021 – June 18 

The United Nations(UN)’s Sustainable Gastronomy Day is annually observed across the globe on 18th June to acknowledge gastronomy as a cultural expression related to the natural and cultural diversity of the world.

The day is observed to create public awareness of its contribution to sustainable development.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) observe the Sustainable Gastronomy Day.

Background:

The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/71/246 on 21st December 2016 and proclaimed the 18th June as Sustainable Gastronomy Day.

Gastronomy:

Gastronomy is the art of food which refers to a style of cooking in a particular region. It also refers to the local food and cuisine.

Sustainable gastronomy, which means cuisine that takes into account where the ingredients are from, how the food is grown and how it gets to our markets and eventually to our plates.

Initiatives towards Sustainable Gastronomy:

UNESCO launched the “UNESCO Creative Cities Network” created in 2004 to share best practices and develop partnerships in 7 creative fields.

  • As of 2020, 26 cities have been designated Creative Cities of Gastronomy.
