QS Asia University Rankings 2023: 19 Indian universities among top 200 

QS Asia Universities Ranking 202319 Indian Universities are featured among the top 200 on the QS Asia University Rankings 2023 released by Quacquarelli Symonds(QS), the International ranking Agency, on 8th November 2022.

QS Asia University Rankings 2023 is the 15th edition of QS World University Rankings: Asia.

  • Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IITB)(Mumbai, Maharashtra), IIT  Delhi (IITD), and Indian Institute of Science(IISc) Bangalore(Bengaluru, Karnataka) have topped among the Indian universities.
  • This is the highest number of Indian universities to ever make it to the top 200 on the list. Among 19, 11 Indian Universities have made it to the top 100 on the list.

About QS Asia University Rankings 2023:

i.Peking University, Beijing, China, which was ranked 2nd in the 2022 ranking, has topped the QS Asia University Rankings 2023, featuring 760 Asian Universities.

ii.The National University of Singapore (NUS) which has ranked first for 4 consecutive years is now ranked 2nd.

iii.The Tsinghua University of China has secured the 3rd rank on the list.

iv.The top 10 universities featured on the list include Universities from across East and South East Asia which includes, Malaysia, Mainland China and South Korea.

v.The 2023 ranking is formulated using key indicators like academic and employer reputations, the number of staff holding a PhD, and the percentage of international students.

Highlights:

i.Around 27% of the Universities on the list are from Southern Asia and Eastern Asia is the most represented sub-region on the list with 50% of all ranked universities.

ii.China(Mainland) is the most represented country on the list with 128 institutes followed by India with 118, Japan with 106 and South Korea with 88. These account for more than half of all ranked institutions.

iii.KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), South Korea has moved 6 places up and ranked 8th on the 2023 ranking. It is the only new South Korean university in the top 10.

i.19 universities among the top 200 includes IIT Bombay (40th), IIT Delhi (46th), IISc Bangalore (52), IIT Madras (53), IIT Kharagpur (61), IIT Kanpur (66) University of Delhi (85), IIT Rorkee (114), JNU (119), IIT Guwahati (124), VIT Vellore (173), University of Calcutta (181), Jadavpur University (182), Anna University (185), Chandigarh University (185), IIT Indore (185), BITS Pilani (188), Jamia Millia Islamia (188), and Amity University Noida (200).

ii.8 Indian Universities among the top 200 of the QS Asia Rankings have improved their rankings as compared to the 2022 ranking.

iii.The universities featured on the list have improved in their Academic Reputation and the International Research Network.

Key Points:

i.Chandigarh University, Gharuan, Punjab has secured 185th rank in Asia, 14th in India and 2nd amongst the private universities of India.

ii.Chandigarh University has become the youngest university in Asia to feature in the top 200 universities in the QS Asia Universities of Asia

i.The QS Asia University Ranking, published annually since 2009, highlights the top universities of Asia each year.

ii.The 11 indicators used to compile the QS Asia University Ranking are; Academic reputation (30%); Employer reputation (20%); Faculty/student ratio (10%); International research network (10%); Citations per paper (10%) and papers per faculty (5%); Staff with a PhD (5%); Proportion of international faculty (2.5%) and proportion of international students (2.5%); and Proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%) and proportion of outbound exchange students (2.5%)
