Punjab Becomes First State To Use NFC-Based “eIDs”

Punjab becomes first State to use NFC-based eIDsPunjab Government becomes the first state in India to  initiate the usage of  Electronic Identity Cards (eIDs) equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for Government officers and employees through Punjab Mandi Board.

Key points:

i.NFC technology is a  wireless communication technology which allows data exchange between devices that are a few centimeters apart.

ii.These NFC-based eIDs will be used as a primary authentication tool and operate at 13.66 MHz and transfer data at up to 424 Kbits/ seconds.

iii.An employee will be authenticated by his/ her Human Resource Management System (HRMS) data where the details of every officer and employee is stored in the form of a service book.

iv.For contactless identity, especially during the COVID-19 period, NFC-enabled mobile phones incorporate smart chips (called secure elements) that allow the phones to securely store and use the data to match with the identity of the person.

Punjab Becomes First State To Launch Digi-Locker Facility For Farmers

Besides promoting e-governance, Punjab also launched a digi-locker facility for its farmers,becoming the first State in India to do so.

  • The digital J-Form in Digi Locker can be used to raise finance from financial institutions, IT waivers, subsidy claims, farmer insurance etc.
  • With this farmers in Punjab can either print or download digital copies of their J-Forms, from the current wheat procurement-2021 season onwards.
