Presidential Rule in Jammu and Kashmir

President rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on the recommendation of the Governor of the state N N Vohra. The decision has been made as no political party took the charge to form the government in the state after the Legislative Assembly elections 2014.

The State’s Assembly election was held in five phases in December 2014.  In the Assembly election,

  • People’s Democratic Party (PDP) – 28 Seats
  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) – 25 Seats
  • National Congress (NC) – 15 Seats.

Article 356 of the Indian Constitution deals with the failure of the constitutional machinery of an Indian state. In that case, the state comes under the direct control of the central government, with executive authority exercised through the Governor instead of a members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) headed by an elected Chief Minister.
