- The 4th edition of the Asian Para Games (2022) marks India’s record for the highest medal tally so far surpassing the previous record medal tally of 72 medals(15 gold, 24 silver, and 33 bronze) in the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

World records broken by India’s para-athletes:
i.Sumit Antil won gold in the javelin throw F64 event with a new world record of 73.29m. He broke his own previous world record of 70.83m
ii.Sundar Singh Gurjar set the world record in the javelin throw F46 event with a throw of 68.60m to surpass the earlier world record of 67.79m.
iii.In Archery, Rakesh Kumar and Suraj Singh pair created a world record with a score of 158 in the quarterfinals of the men’s compound team event in which they won silver medal.

i.Sheetal Devi is the only current female international archer to shoot with her feet.The 16-year-old Sheetal Devi won two gold and a silver in the following events

- Gold – Mixed Team Compound – Open(along with Rakesh Kumar)
- Silver – women’s compound doubles (along with Sarita)
ii.Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara won the gold medal with a new Asian Para Games record of 249.6 points in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1(Shooting)
- She won the Gold Medal in 10m air rifle standing event and a Bronze Medal in 50m rifle 3 positions event at Tokyo (Japan)2020 Paralympics.
iii.Prachi Yadav won two medals, including a gold in the women’s KL2 event (canoe) and a silver in the women’s VL2 event, which was also India’s first medal in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games .
- The canoe is a light narrow boat with both ends sharp that is usually propelled by paddling.
iv.Rudransh Khandelwal won two silver medals in Shooting including one in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 and another in Mixed 50m Pistol SH1event.
v.Ankur Dhama set a new record by becoming the first Indian to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games.
- He won gold medals in the Men’s 5000m-T11 and Men’s 1500m-T11 respectively.
vi.Paralympic champion Mariyappan Thangavelu won the silver medal in the Men’s High Jump – T63 event.
- He won gold medal in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and a silver medal in Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (Tokyo, Japan)
vii.Bhavina Patel won the bronze medal in the Women’s Singles – Class 4 event(Table Tennis).
- She won a silver medal in Class 4 Table tennis at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
viii.Narayan Thakur won two bronze medals in athletics including one in the men’s 100m-T35 event and another in the men’s 200m-T35 event (running).
ix.Aruna Tanwar won India’s first-ever para taekwondo medal by winning bronze medal in the Women’s K44 -47kg event.
x.Dharmaraj Solairaj won the gold medal in the men’s long jump-T64 with a new Asian and Para Games record of 6.80m.
About Hangzhou Asian Para Games 2022:
i.The Indian contingent comprises 303 athletes (189 men and 114 women) who participated in 17 sports out of 22 sports events.
ii.Sport-wise, India has secured the maximum medals in athletics: 55 medals (18 gold, 17 silver, and 20 bronze), followed by 21 medals in badminton, chess (8), archery (7), shooting (6), canoeing (4), powerlifting (3), and judo (2), Table Tennis(2) and 1 each in swimming, taekwondo, and rowing.
iii.For the first time, Indian players participated in the following sports: Boccia, Blind Football, Lawn Bowls, Taekwondo, Rowing, and Canoe.
- The newly introduced sports at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games are para taekwondo and para canoe.
iv.The youngest Indian player was 14-year old Sharon Rachel Aby, who participated in chess, and the oldest player was 50-year old Surjeet Singh, who participated in Para Lawn Bowls.
Mascot – The “Divine Bird” named ‘Feifei’ is the mascot.
Torch – The torch is called “Laurels”. Its design was inspired by the ancient jade “Cong” unearthed in Liangzhu, China.
Medal – The medal is named Osmanthus Grace, which is another core element of the Asian Para Games.
Emblem – The motif of the emblem comprises the posture of a wheelchaired athlete striving forward. A running track, formed by 10 semi-arc lines with a gradient ramp from purple to red and then yellow, stretches out into the distance, as with the surging Qiantang River tides.
