Nagaland has won 7 Van Dhan Awards 2020-2021 for its outstanding performance in various categories. The state topped in 3 categories, Best Survey State, Best Training State and the most number of Van Dhan Vikas Clusters(VDVKCs).
The awards were announced by Arjun Munda, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, during the 34th Foundation day of the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED).
- The Van Dhan Awards was instituted by the TRIFED to recognise Van Dhan Self Help Groups (VDSHG), VDVKCs, tribal artisans, forest produce gatherers and people working for them, for their achievements and contributions.
- The awards were given under various categories such as the implementation of MSP for Minor Forest Produce (MFP), Van Dhan Yojana, adoption of digital technology, innovation and creativity, sales generated, training and number of VDVK clusters established.

Key Points:
i.TRIFED has implemented the Van Dhan programme across 27 states and 207 districts with the availability of MFPs and forest-dwelling tribal populations.
ii.The sale and collection of MFP’s contribute 40-60% of tribal annual learning and the value addition supports in tripling their income.
Note:
Under this scheme, Nagaland has 206 clusters which comprise self-help groups(SHG) and 61,800 beneficiaries.

About Van Dhan Yojana:
i.The Van Dhan Yojana is an initiative of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs(MoTA) and TRIFED launched on 14th April 2018.
ii.This aims to improve the income of the tribal community through the value addition of tribal products.
iii.MoTA will be the central level nodal department and the TRIFED will be the National Level nodal agency.
iv.The Van Dhan Vikas Kendras established under this scheme provides skill upgradation and capacity building training and value addition facility.
Recent Related News:
i.TRIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India), Ministry of Tribal Affairs is set to partner with NITI Aayog for implementation of Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) initiative under Van Dhan Yojna in 39 Tribal Aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog.
ii.The Union Minister for Tribal Affairs launched the Tribal Livelihoods Initiative ‘Sankalp Se Siddhi-Mission Van Dhan’. Along with the initiative, the Union Minister also launched 7 new Tribes India Outlets, Tribes India Coffee table book, Van Dhan website, software application, and new TRIFED Head Office in New Delhi.
