MoPSW Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launches Multiple Development Projects in Assam

Shipping minister launches multiple development projects in AssamOn September 19, 2022, the Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) launched multiple projects for the development of Bogibeel region near Dibrugarh in Assam which include the following:

Foundation stone laid for construction of two floating jetties at Bogibeel and Guijan

The Minister has laid the foundation stone for two floating jetties at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh district; and Guijan in Tinsukia district which will be constructed as state-of-the-art terminals using the most advanced technology.

Construction Company:

They are being constructed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) over the National Waterways 2 (NW-2), the river Brahmaputra.

  • The work has been awarded to Coastal Consolidated Structures Pvt. Ltd on an EPC contract mode (Engineering, Procurement, Construction).

Outlay:

Estimated Rs 8.25 crores

Completion Time:

By February, 2023

Inauguration of Bogibeel Riverfront passenger jetty

The Minister also inaugurated the Bogibeel Riverfront Passenger Jetty which is developed by the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) with an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crores. This development is a part of riverfront development near the Bogibeel bridge.

  • There are plans to construct an open platform, a restaurant, 8 bio-toilets and 6 awnings as part of the riverfront site.The entire structure is constructed over rail columns with angle frame covered by WPC board floorings.

Points to be noted:

i.India’s longest river cruise service will begin from early next year between Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and Bogibeel, traversing a distance of more than 4,000 kms via Ganga, Indo Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR), and Brahmaputra.

ii.A permanent cargo terminal at Bogibeel is also being planned for transport of cargo from the neighbouring industries like Brahmaputra Cracker & Polymer Limited, Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corp etc.

iii.A tourist terminal is also proposed in the vicinity of the Guijan Ghat, located on the banks of the river Lohit.
