March 8 : International Women’s Day

March 8 is observed as International Women’s Day every year since 1911. The day is observed  to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. The United Nations’ theme for International Women’s Day 2015 is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”.

The 2015 International Women’s Day will highlight the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which is a blue print agreed by 189 countries 20 years ago that sets the agenda for realizing women’s rights.

In India, Women are subjected to various crimes such as acid throwing, child marriage, domestic violence, dowry, sex-selective abortion, female infanticide, genital mutilation, rape, sexual harassment, forced prostitution, and trafficking.

India, a country which treated women as sisters and mothers, witnessed the birth of grammarians such as Patanjali Katyayana and brave woman like Rani Laxmi Bai, respected the women by giving their names to most of the Indian rivers, has become the Fourth most dangerous place for Women in the World.

Men and Women are like two wings of a Bird. They should be treated equally and must be given the respect they deserve. Men should be responsible and the next generation should be educated about the importance of Women. Then only the family and also the country will prosper.
