March 24 : World Tuberculosis Day

World Tuberculosis Day is observed on March 12, every year since 1982, to create awareness to the public about the dreadful tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease.

Why March 24?

On March 24, in the year 1882, German microbiologist Robert Koch announced his discovery of the bacterium that causes tuberculosis. So March 24 was selected as Tuberculosis Day.

The Theme for World Tuberculosis Day 2015 is Reach, Treat, Cure Everyone.

Knowledge is Wealth

  • Tuberculosis is a infectious disease caused by bacteria, mostly Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, which affects mainly the lungs. 
  • Tuberculosis spreads via air when people with TB infection cough, sneeze, or transmit respiratory fluids through air. 
  • The common symptoms of TB infection includes chronic cough with blood-tinged sputum, fever, and severe weight loss. 
  • Every year TB kills more than 1.5 million people worldwide. 
  • Vaccination of TB – The most commonly used vaccine for Tuberculosis is BCG Vaccine – Bacillus Calmette Guerin Vaccine
  • According to the statistics of World Health Organisation (WHO), India is the highest TB burden country.
