Mali declared free of Ebola

The government of Mali and the United Nations have declared the nation free of Ebola following a 42-day period without a new case of the deadly virus. A total of 7 people have died in Mail in the past one year outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

To be declared as Ebola-free, a country should report no new cases for 42 days. According to World Health Organization (WHO) report, Ebola has killed more than 8,400 people, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

Ebola was first identified in Africa in 1976. It is caused by a RNA virus.

The virus is named after the Ebola river.

Researchers believe that the hosts of this disease are fruit bats. Exact host is still not known. 

Scientists have identified five subspecies of Ebola virus. 

ZMapp from Mapp Biopharmacuetical Inc is an experimental drug, which was first tested in the 2014 Ebola outbreak. The clinical trials are yet to done to support widespread usage in humans.
