The International Nurses Day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.
The theme of IND 2021 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare.
The theme focuses on the changes and innovations in nursing and how to shape the future of healthcare.
Background:
i.The international Nurse Day was first proposed by Dorothy Sutherland, an officer from the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare in 1953.
ii.The day was first proclaimed by Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States.
iii.The first international nurses day was observed by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1965.
About Florence Nightingale:
i.Florence Nightingale, “The Lady with the Lamp”, was a British Nurse who was known as the founder of modern nursing.
ii.She was born on 12th May 1820, in Florence, Italy.
iii.She was the first woman who was honoured with the Order of Merit in 1907.
Additional info:
i.According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), Nurses account for more than 50% of the world’s healthcare workers.
ii.Around than 9 million more nurses and midwives are required by 2030 so that all the countries can attain Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being
iii.Through the Department of Human Resources for Health (HRH), WHO works to promote the role of nurses in health care delivery.
