India’s Water Man conferred with Stockholm Water Prize

Environment activist of India Rajendra Singh has been conferred with Stockholm Water Prize to recognize his enormous efforts for instilling life in the villages of Rajasthan through water. The award comprises a a cash prize of 1,50,000 USD and it ll be presented by Sweden’s King Carl Gustav.

• Rajendra Singh was an Ayurvedic doctor who quit his job to encourage rainwater harvesting process in India.
• Singh is also referred as Water Man of India.
• Singh’s Organization Tarun Bharat Sangh volunteered many young Indians and started purifying traditional rainwater tanks.
• The movement has revived five rivers in Rajasthan.
• With more than 350 check dams, Arvari river which was dry for the past 60 years started flowing again.  By 1995 Arvari became perennial river and was awarded ‘International River Prize’. 
• Singh played important role in stopping destructive dams like Loharinag Pala hydropower project over river Bhagirathi.
• In 2001, he was conferred with Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.
