India’s Largest Floating Solar Power Plant at Telangana to be commissioned by May 2021

NTPC to commission India’s largest floating solar power plant at RamagundamIndia’s Largest Floating Solar Power Plant of 100 MegaWatt (MW) capacity being constructed at Ramagundam in Peddapalli district of Telangana is set to be commissioned by May-June, 2021. It will be India’s largest floating solar plant in a single location as of now.

  • It is being developed by NTPC South (formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) at a cost of INR 423 Crore over the water surface of Sri Ram Sagar Project Reservoir.
  • It will also be India’s biggest floating solar plant, by generation capacity, to date.
  • Along with the 100 MW Ramagundam solar plant, two other projects namely the 92 MW floating unit at Kayamkulam gas plant in Kerala & the 25 MW unit at Simhadri power plant in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh will also be commissioned by May-June, 2021.

NTPC in South Region

The total capacity of all projects being developed by NTPC in the region is 447 MW.

  • Out of 447 MW, 217 MW (100 MW project, 92 MW project & 25 Mw project) capacity will be commissioned by May 2021
  • The remaining 230MW will be generated by a ground-mounted solar power plant at Ettayapuram, Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, which will be commissioned by March 2023.

Fact

NTPC Southern region has a total installed capacity of about 9, 125 MW, out of NTPL’s total capacity of 64, 880 MW in India.

Coal-fired thermal power project at Ramagundam

NTPL is also in the process of commissioning a 2 X 800 MW coal-fired thermal power project at Ramagundam, Telangana.

  • Phase I unit of 800 MW will be commissioned by January 2022
  • Phase II of 800 MW by March 2022
