G.K Reddy Memorial National Award to Vinod Mehta

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday presented the G.K. Reddy Memorial National Award to late veteran journalist Vinod Mehta.

  • The award was received by Vinod Mehta’s wife, Sumita Mehta.

Sonia Gandhi About Vinod Mehta :

  • “In the present climate, when dissent is being stifled, when the minorities feel increasingly insecure, when the secular fabric of our society is threatened, when bigotry and obscurantism seem to flourish unchecked, we miss Vinod Mehta’s voice,” Ms. Gandhi said.
  • Recalling Vinod Mehta as an eloquent advocate of India’s pluralistic society, Ms. Gandhi said he had an instinctive understanding of what the freedom of press meant to India — that it is the cornerstone of Indian democracy and that without this freedom, all other liberties will be threatened.

K. Reddy Memorial National Award:

  • The award, given for outstanding contribution to journalism.
  •  Founded by Member of Parliament and Chairman of the TSR Foundation, T. Subbarami Reddy, a nephew of G.K. Reddy.
  • The award carries a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh, a gold medal and a citation.
  • The jury of the GK Reddy memorial award has been constituted with MP Karan Singh as chairman of the award committee.
