1. Provoke

Meaning – stimulate or incite (someone) to do or feel something, especially by arousing anger in them.

Usage – “the decision provoked a storm of protest from civil rights organizations”

synonyms – arouse, produce, evoke, cause, give rise to, occasion, call forth, draw forth, elicit, induce, inspire, excite, spark off, touch off, kindle, generate, engender, instigate etc.

2. Privilege

Meaning – a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.

Usage – “education is a right, not a privilege”

synonyms – advantage, right, benefit, prerogative, entitlement, birthright, due; concession, freedom, liberty etc.

3. Envisage

Meaning – contemplate or conceive of as a possibility or a desirable future event.

Usage – “the Rome Treaty envisaged free movement across frontiers”

synonyms – foresee, predict, forecast, foretell, anticipate, expect, think likely, envision; intend, propose etc.

4. Dissolute

Meaning – (of a person or a way of life) overindulging in sensual pleasures.

Usage – “unfortunately, his heir was feckless and dissolute”

synonyms – dissipated, debauched, decadent, intemperate, profligate, abandoned, self-indulgent, rakish, louche, licentious, promiscuous, lecherous, libertine, wanton, lustful, libidinous, lewd etc.

5. Ameliorate

Meaning – make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better.

Usage – “the reform did much to ameliorate living standards”

6. Mitigation

Meaning – the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something.

Usage – “the identification and mitigation of pollution”

synonyms – alleviation, reduction, diminution, lessening, easing, weakening, lightening, assuagement, palliation, cushioning, dulling, deadening; soothing ETC.

7. Pre-eminent

Meaning – surpassing all others; very distinguished in some way.

Usage – “the world’s pre-eminent expert on asbestos”

synonyms –greatest, leading, foremost, best, finest, chief, outstanding, excellent, distinguished, prominent, eminent, important, major, star, top, top-tier, topmost, famous etc.

8. Deterioration

Meaning – the process of becoming progressively worse.

Usage – “a deterioration in the condition of the patient”

synonyms – worsening, decline, decay, collapse, failure, fall, drop, downturn, slump, slip, slide, stagnation, waning, ebb, retrogression etc.

9. Reiterate

Meaning – say something again or a number of times, typically for emphasis or clarity.

Usage – “she reiterated that the government would remain steadfast in its support”

synonyms – repeat, say again, restate, retell, recapitulate, go over (and over), iterate, rehearse, belabour, dwell on, harp on, hammer away at; informaldo over; archaicingeminate etc.

10. Delineate

Meaning – describe or portray (something) precisely.

Usage – “the law should delineate and prohibit behaviour which is socially abhorrent”

synonyms – describe, set forth, set out, present, outline, depict, portray, represent, characterize; map out, chart; define, detail, specify, identify, particularize etc.
