1. Sobriety – संयम

Meaning – the state of being sober.

Synonyms – soberness, clear-headedness; abstinence, teetotalism, non-indulgence; abstemiousness, temperance, moderation, moderateness.

Usage – “the price of beer compelled me to maintain a certain level of sobriety.

2. Berate – गाली देना

Meaning – scold or criticize (someone) angrily.

Synonyms – rebuke, reprimand, reproach, reprove, admonish, remonstrate with, chastise, chide, upbraid, take to task, pull up, castigate, lambaste, read someone the Riot Act, give someone a piece of one’s mind, go on at, haul over the coals, criticize, censure; informaltell off, give someone a talking-to, give someone a telling-off, dress down, give someone a dressing-down, give someone an earful, give someone a roasting, give someone a rocket, give someone a rollicking.

Usage – she berated herself for being fickle.

3. Bereave – वंचित करना

Meaning – be deprived of a close relation or friend through their death.

Synonyms – deprive, dispossess, rob, divest, strip.

Usage – she had recently been bereaved.

4. Hedge – बाड़ा

Meaning – a fence or boundary formed by closely growing bushes or shrubs.

Synonyms – hedgerow, row of bushes, fence; windbreak, barrier, barricade, boundary.

Usage – houses concealed behind high hedges.

5. Spur – प्रेरणा

Meaning – a thing that prompts or encourages someone; an incentive.

Synonyms – stimulus, incentive, encouragement, stimulant, stimulation, inducement, impetus, prod, prompt; incitement, goad; fillip; motive, motivation.

Usage – wars act as a spur to practical invention.

6. Strenuous – ज़ोरदार

Meaning – requiring or using great effort or exertion.

Synonyms – arduous, difficult, hard, tough, taxing, demanding, exacting, uphill, stiff, formidable, heavy, exhausting, tiring, fatiguing, gruelling, back-breaking, murderous, punishing.

Usage – the government made strenuous efforts to upgrade the quality of the teaching profession.

7. Deed – कर्म

Meaning – an action that is performed intentionally or consciously.

Synonyms – act, action, activity; feat, exploit, performance, achievement, accomplishment, attainment, endeavour, effort; undertaking, enterprise.

Usage – tales of knightly deeds.

8. Truant – अनुपस्थित रहने

Meaning – a pupil who stays away from school without leave or explanation.

Synonyms – absentee, non-attender; informalskiver; informalwag.

9. Wilt – मुरझाना

Meaning – (of a plant, leaf, or flower) become limp through heat, loss of water, or disease; droop.

Synonyms – droop, sag, become limp, become flaccid, flop; wither, shrivel.

Usage – the roses had begun to wilt.

10. Putrid – सड़ा हुआ

Meaning – (of organic matter) decaying or rotting and emitting a fetid smell.

Synonyms – decomposing, decomposed, decaying, decayed, rotting, rotten, bad, off, putrefied, putrescent, rancid, mouldy, spoilt; foul, fetid, stinking, rank; rareputrefacient, putrefactive, olid.

Usage – a butcher who sold putrid meat.
