Shripad Yesso Naik to inaugurate National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga in New Delhi on 5th June
On 5th June 2018, Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge), Shripad Yesso Naik will inaugurate the 3rd National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga at Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) in New Delhi.
National Health Editors’ Conference on Yoga:
i. The conference is organized by the Ministry of AYUSH along with the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY).
ii. This Conference on ‘Evidence Based Recent Innovative Research on Yoga – A Review of Yoga Research’ is conducted to mark the beginning of International Day of Yoga (21st June).
iii. Over 100 Health Editors from National and Regional media organizations would take part in the conference.
iv. The conference aims to enlighten the media persons on the scientific aspects of yoga & its benefits for human health.
v. A Workshop on “How to Manage Stress through Yoga” will be a main highlight of the conference.

Piyush Goyal flags off Humsafar Jodhpur Bandra Express in Rajasthan
On 3rd June 2018, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal flagged off Humsafar Jodhpur Bandra Express at Bhagat Ki Kothi Railway Station in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
Humsafar Jodhpur Bandra Express:
i. Piyush Goyal said that necessary arrangements like mobile charging points, CCTVs and Bio Toilets have been made in the trains.
ii. He said that railway projects worth more than Rs 13,000 crore have been undertaken in Rajasthan currently.

Charminar adopted by NTPC under Swachh Iconic Places Project
On June 1, 2018, NTPC adopted the Charminar in Hyderabad under the Swachh Iconic Places Project.
Key points:
i. This is under Centre’s Swachh Bharat Mission.
ii. NTPC ltd and Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has inked an MOU for development and beautification of the Charminar gate.
iii. The developments would include : battery operated vehicles for tourists , bollards to prevent traffic, Swachh Auto Tippers (SAT) , mechanical sweeping machines, litter picking machines, construction of public utilities toilets, drinking water , ATM kiosks etc.
iv. This project is under Corporate Social Responsibility and NTPC  is contributing Rs. 8.19 crore for beautification within 9 months of signing the act .
v. This beautification project will be done by GHMC.
vi. NTPC also launched a cleanliness drive under Swachh Pakhwada for cleaning and garbage removal in the Charminar premises.
Swachh Pakhwada:
It is a scheme launched to focus on the cleanliness drives and practices of Swachhata by engaging different ministries and departments of GOI. It was launched 2016.

Gujarat govt to start dedicated ambulance service for infants for inter hospital transfers during emergencies
On June 3, 2018, the state government of Gujrat has launched  a dedicated ambulance service for infants .
Objective:
To prevent the death of newborns due to lack of emergency medical facilities in health centres.
Key points:
i. This service is under the ‘Neonatal ambulance service project for inter-hospital transfer’ .
ii. It would consist of 10 well equipped ambulances across the state.
iii. The service started as a pilot project in Jamnagar Civil Hospital.
iv. This project would help newborns of the primary health care centres in the rural areas as they do not have needed medical services available.
v. The ambulance would have special equipment such as baby warmer machines, on-board treatment and comfort .
vi. This service will be linked to the ‘108’ service and can be used during emergency.
vii. According to National Family Health Survey 2015-16, infant mortality in Gujarat is 39 compared to 27 in other urban states.

Two new eco-tourism projects to come up in Telengana : TSFDC
On June 3, 2018, Telangana State Forest Development Corporation (TSFDC) has launched two eco-tourism projects in the state.
Key points:
i. One will be developed in Chintaguda Village of Mancherial district near Kawal Tiger reserve6 acres of land has been allotted for this.
ii. Another will be developed in the back waters of Nagarjuna Sagar at Vizag Colony in  15 acres of land has been allotted for this.
iii. TSFDC has already done 4 eco-tourism projects in Hyderabad.
iv. It has achieved an all-time highest productivity in harvesting of Eucalyptus Clonal plantation.

OUP to host 2nd South Asia Conclave on July 4
On 4th June 2018, the second edition of Oxford University Press’ (OUP) South Asia Conclave will be conducted.
2nd South Asia Conclave:
i. The South Asia Conclave will see participation from Policymakers, bureaucrats, academicians and journalists.
ii. Issues related to politics, business and healthcare etc. will be discussed. Issues specific to South Asia will be focused.
iii. Some speakers are: Union minister Jayant Sinha, Congress MP Rajeev Gowda, former CEC SY Quraishi and journalist Shekhar Gupta.
iv. The conference will be chaired by Ashutosh Varshney, professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Contemporary South Asia, Brown University.
v.It will be co-chaired by Pradeep Chhibber, professor of Political Science and Director of the Institute of International Studies at the University of California.

Financial Literacy Week to begins from June 4 to June 8, RBI sets consumer protection as this years’ theme
On June 3, 2018, The Financial Literacy week begins from June 4 to June 8 2018.
The theme for this years Financial Literacy week has been declared by RBI as : Consumer Protection.
Key points:
i. This event would create awareness among customer of banks about the various financial products and services available to them and  would encourage them to go digital.
ii. It would consist of consumer protection messages like ‘Good Practices for safe digital banking’ and ‘Know your liability’ focusing on the liability of the customer for safe digital banking where if the bank is informed within 3 days of unauthorized digital transaction the customer won’t be liable.
iii. Resolution of the complaints would be received within 90 days from the date of receipt of complaint .
iv. Awareness regarding Banking Ombudsman scheme would be emphasized .
v. Bankers, Financial Literacy Counsellors (FLCs) and other stakeholders will participate to create awareness.

BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India to be shared mobility leader by 2030: Morgan Stanley
On June 3, 2018, the global financial services major Morgan Stanley reported that India would become a leader in shared mobility by 2030.
Key points:
i. This improvement would be caused by the increasing amount of electric and autonomous vehicles being used.
ii. This would increase the shared miles by 35% to 50% of all miles travelled in India by 2040.
iii. The trend of shared mobility with the vast population and internet services would help replace the public transport system and individual car ownership by app based taxi services.
iv. In 2017, 10% of a total of 257 million miles have been travelled by shared mobility and this trend would increase to 35% by 2030.
v. Population of 61 cities is more than 850,000 and 50 cities is more than 1 million. This along with World Bank’s data 850 million people under 35 age group suggests  the trend would rise as they are more comfortable with emergin technology.

The MoEFCC signed an MoU with TERI for setting up a resource efficiency cell
On June 3, 2018, Ministry of Environment , Forest and Climate Change and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has inked MOU to set up a resource efficiency cell.
The initiative taken in the MOU has been launched by Secretary, MoEFCC, Shri CK Mishra and Director General, TERI, Dr Ajay Mathur, at an event at Vigyan Bhawanin Delhi.
Objective:
To focus on waste management and resource efficiency .
Salient Features:
i. The aim is to promote resource efficiency by enabling coordinated thinking among various ministries.
ii. It would focus on system based use of materials, products and processes in India.
iii. European Union and MoEFCC also signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) to support the  EU Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI) Project in India, which would  foster the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources in India.
iv. A TERI paper on Opportunities and Challenges of Plastics Waste Management has been released that states that annual average per capita consumption of plastic in India is about 11 kgs, with maximum plastic waste of water and soft drink bottles.
v. Seas near Mumbai, Kerala and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are among the worst polluted in the world. The plastic debris affect at least 267 species worldwide, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species, and 43% of all marine mammal species.
vi. Effective collection , recycling and use of bio-degradable plastic can reduce emission of Green House Gases (GHG).
vii. An industry consortium on ‘Waste-Proofing the Future’ to identify and  sustainably manage waste was launched at the event. The consortium has been launched with eight members comprising Aditya Birla Group, RED FM, KidZania India – ImagiNation Edutainment India Pvt Ltd, Dalmia (Bharat) Cement Ltd, Uflex Ltd, and DS Group of Companies.
viii. To begin with waste collection points will also be set up in schools through KidZania.
About India’s role in waste management :
India generates an estimated 32 million metric tons of packaging waste each year, of which plastic constitutes 16 per cent. The unorganised collection of waste leads to cherry-picking of wastes, with only 14% of plastic packaging being collected for recycling.
Between 2010 and 2020, India’s demand for various materials is estimated to increase from US $1.4 trillion to US $5 trillion. Resource efficiency works along the various stages (design, manufacturing, refurbishment, and end-of-life) of product life cycles, including the three ‘R’s – reduce, reuse,   and recycle.

GAIL India to import 1st Russian LNG shipment from Gazprom
On June 3, 2018, India would import its first ever LNG from Russia on June 4, 2018.
India considered the fourth largest buyer of Liquefied Natural gas.
Key points:
i. GAIL India Ltd. will be importing the LNG from Gazprom at Petronet LNG.
ii. Earlier LNG from US was imported at Dabhol port of Mumbai for the first time.
iii. The supply between GAIL and Gazprom is a 20 year deal of import of 2.5 million tonnes of LNG a year.
iv. The further break up of the 2.5 million tonnes is : 0.5 MT in 2018-19 , 0.75 in 2019-20, and 1.5 MT in 2020-21.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

International Olympiad winners of 2017-18 were facilitated by MoS Corporate Affairs and Law and Justice Shri. P. P. Chaudhary.
On June 3, 2018, Minister of State for Corporate affairs and Law and Justice , Shri P.P. Chaudhary gave awards to International Olympiad winners of 2017-18 from class IV to XII. These Olympiad exams are conducted by Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF).
Key points :
i. According to SOF, 45000 schools from 1400 cities across 30 countries have participated in 6th Olympiad 2017-18.
ii. About 55,000 students from 5,850 schools have been awarded for achieving top state level ranks.
iii. Over 8,00,000 students have been awarded “Medals of Excellence” for achieving top rank in their respective schools.
iv. 1,500 principals & teachers were also honoured for their commitment to academics and single minded pursuit in improving the students’ academic knowledge and successfully preparing them for competitive exams.

India’s Sanjana Ramesh wins the MVP Award at Basketball Without Borders Asia 2018
India’s Sanjana Ramesh was awarded the ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) at Basketball Without Borders Asia 2018, that ended at the NBA Academy India in Greater Noida, on 2nd June 2018.
Sanjana Ramesh – MVP at Basketball Without Borders Asia 2018:
i. Sanjana Ramesh hails from Bengaluru. Among Boys Rence Forthsky of Philippines was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
ii. This is the 10th edition of the Basketball Without Borders Asia camp. It was conducted by the NBA (National Basketball Association) and FIBA (International Basketball Federation).
iii. It saw participation from 66 campers from 16 countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Vaishnavi Yadav of Uttar Pradesh was awarded the ‘Girls Grit Award’.

Rabada wins South Africa’s top player prize
On 2nd June 2018, Kagiso Rabada, the world’s number one Test bowler, was named as South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year.
Kagiso Rabada – South Africa’s Cricketer of the Year:
i. The award has been announced at the end of a 12-month period in which Kagiso Rabada consistently won matches. He is 23 years old.
ii. This is his second Cricketer of the Year award. He already won the award in 2016.
iii. Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, Makhaya Ntini and AB de Villiers are also two-time winners of this award.
iv. Kagiso Rabada received a total of six awards, including Test cricketer of the year, one-day international player of the year and players’ player of the year.

Assam girl ambassador of ‘promote science’ initiative in France
Priyanka Das from Assam has been appointed as ambassador for ‘promote science’ initiative in France to encourage girls to pursue scientific careers.
Priyanka Das – ambassador of ‘promote science’ initiative in France:
i. Priyanka Das is doing her PhD and working in R&D in the Navigation Systems division of France’s Safran. She is 26 years old.
ii. “For Girls and Science” initiative was introduced in 2014 to promote scientific careers among youth, mainly girls.
iii. It is supported by the Ministry of National Education of France and the L’Oreal Foundation.
iv. It is linked with the L’Oreal Women in Science programme that awards five women scientists every year along with UNESCO.

India successfully test-fires indigenously developed nuclear capable long range Ballistic missile Agni-5 off Odisha coast
On 3rd June 2018, India successfully test-fired Agni-5, its indigenously developed nuclear capable long range ballistic missile with strike range of 5,000 km from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
Agni-5:
i. Agni-5 is a surface-to-surface missile. It was launched with the help of a mobile launcher from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Dr Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal.
ii. This was the sixth trial of Agni-5. It successfully covered its full distance during the trial.
iii. Its flight performance was tracked and monitored by radars, tracking instruments and observation stations throughout the mission.
iv. Agni-5 is the most advanced with modern technologies in navigation and guidance, warhead and engine.
v. It features very high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System (RINS), and advanced Micro Navigation System (MINS).
vi. It has a high speed on-board computer and fault tolerant software with a robust and reliable bus.
vii. Its path is directed by the advanced on-board computer and inertial navigation system.
viii. It has 3 stages. It is 17 metres tall and 2 metres wide. It has the capacity to carry a nuclear warhead of 1.5 tonnes.
ix. It also has higher reliability, longer shelf life, less maintenance and better mobility.
x. It has been designed in a manner that after reaching the peak of its trajectory, it will turn towards the earth and continue towards the intended target with increased speed.
xi. The increased speed is attributed to the earth’s gravitational force. After it enters earth’s atmosphere, the atmospheric air rubbing the missile increases the temperature over 4,000 degrees Celsius.
xii. Apart from the Agni-5, other Agni missiles are: Agni-1 with a 700-km range, Agni-2 with a 2,000-km range, Agni-3 and Agni-4 with 2,500 km to more than 3,500 km range.

World Bicycle Day – June 3, 2018
On 3rd June 2018, the first World Bicycle Day was celebrated all over the world.
World Bicycle Day:
i. When: June 3 was declared as World Bicycle Day on 12th April 2018 by United Nations. 3 June 2018 is the first World Bicycle Day.
ii. Why: The World Bicycle Day has been coined to honour the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle and the environmental and health benefits of using bicycle as a mode of transport.
iii. This day highlights the use of bicycle as a means of promoting sustainable development, improving physical education, promoting health, preventing disease, etc.
