Central Government granted the approval to set up of e-Foreigner Tribunal (e-FT) in Assam
Central Government has permitted to set up e-Foreigner Tribunal (e-FT) in Assam. It is a quasi-judicial authority which assesses the question of the authenticity of a person’s citizenship. It should be set up by July 31, 2019, when the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC) is published. The people left out in the final NRC can challenge their exclusion through these tribunals.
Key Points:
i. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of e-FT Mission is Anand Prakash Tiwari.
ii. It will help in effective monitoring and resolution of cases registered with Foreigner Tribunal.
iii. It will help to strengthen the Judiciary in the disposal of cases and assist the Police organization in faster detection, prosecution and detention.
iv. The main aim of the project is to maintain a statewide biometric and biographic data in order to capture the illegal migrants’ data to computerize data flow for all the stakeholders. Along with this, it will also help in the legalization of eligible beneficiaries for welfare schemes.

Maritime Information Sharing Workshop 2019 held in Gurugram
The two-day event of Maritime Information Sharing Workshop 2019 (MISW 2019) hosted by the Indian Navy under the aegis of the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) held in Gurugram, Haryana on June 12, 2019.

Maritime Information Sharing Workshop 2019Key points:
i. The workshop was inaugurated by Vice Admiral MS Pawar, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff.
ii. Participation: It saw the participation of more than 41 delegates from 29 countries of Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and beyond.
iii. Objectives: It was aimed to make aware of all participants about IFC-IOR .It was also aimed at promoting and sharing regarding the security and safety challenges faced by IOR.
iv. Highlighted issues: Several talks regarding maritime challenges in Indo-Pacific region were discussed. It also highlighted significance of maritime domain as well as the challenges faced by region such as piracy, maritime terrorism, humanitarian assistance & disaster relief, human & drug trafficking as well as the legal perspective of combating these challenges.
About Information Fusion Centre Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR)
i. It was launched in December 2018 by then Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at Gurugram.
ii. It was established with a vision of strengthening maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

DGT partnered with Cisco & Accenture for skilling programme
On June 14, 2019, Directorate General of Training (DGT), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) joined hands with Cisco and Accenture, private sector companies, to skill the youth for digital economy through Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The implementation partner is Quest Alliance.

Key Points:
i. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of Dr. K. P Krishnan, Secretary, MSDE by DGT’s Director General Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, Shri Harish Krishnan, Managing Director, Public Affairs and Strategic Engagements, Cisco India and SAARC, Ms Kshitija Krishnaswamy, Director, Corporate Citizenship, Accenture in India and Shri Aakash Sethi, CEO, Quest Alliance.
ii. Nearly 15 lakh students across all the ITIs in India can use the digital learning module via the Bharat Skills portal.
iii. The program consists of tailor-made curriculum with modules for digital literacy, career readiness, employability skills and advanced technology skills such as data analytics, and a blended learning model enabled by a combination of online self-learning via the Bharat Skills portal and in-classroom modules.
iv. The initial phase is the classroom training program. It is rolled out across 227 ITIs in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Bihar and Assam and will deliver more than 240 hours of training to impart critical 21st-century skills, including digital literacy and digital fluency. The online module is optimized for mobile phones. It will enable on the-go self-learning and the toolkit will include train the trainer resources.
v. Cisco will provide access to Networking Academy courses directly to ITI students.

India constitutes 12% of global internet users
According to the report on internet trends released by the venture capitalist, Mary Meeker stated that India ranks second by witnessing 12% world internet users (close to 455 million). China leads the chart with 21% of global internet users while the U.S (United States) placed third with 8%.

Key points:
i. Now the total internet users (3.88 billion) is more than half the world’s population.
ii. The growth in internet users in India was mainly driven by low price data plans introduced by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd and cheaper smartphones.
iii. The report points out that, the number of people active online in 2018 was approximately 3.8 billion or 51% of the world’s population compared to 2017 with 3.6 billion people or 49% of the world’s population.
iv. The report also states that Asia Pacific contributed the most number of internet users, 53% of the global population, followed by Europe and Africa.

Canada to curb single-use plastics from 2021
On June 10, 2019, The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced to ban single-use plastics from 2021. The products which are expected to be banned are cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, straws, bags and drink stirrers. The goal of the government is “Zero plastic waste (from) coast to coast”. This is done to reduce ocean waste.

Key Points:
i. The estimated figures show that one million birds and over 100,000 marine mammals die or get injured when they get caught in plastic or ingest it.
ii. The decision was made following the establishment of an Ocean Plastics Charter at the G7 conference 2018.

As per RBI, Bank frauds worth Rs. 2.05 lakh crore reported in the last 11 years
The central bank of the country, the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) data revealed that 53,334 fraud cases worth Rs. 2.05 lakh crore hit the banks in India in the last 11 fiscal years i.e, between 2008-09 and 2018-19. The highest number of cases were reported in ICICI (Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India) Bank, State Bank of India (SBI) and HDFC (Housing Development Finance Corporation) Bank.

RBI asked banks to grout ATMs to a wall, pillar, or floor in order to increase security
On June 14, 2019, The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) asked the banks to grout Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to a wall, pillar, or floor by September 30, 2019 in order to mitigate risks in ATM operations and increase security. Exceptions were given to the ATMs installed in high secured premises such as airports as they have adequate CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) coverage and are guarded by state/central security personnel.
Key Points:
i. The measure was adopted by the RBI after the recommendations made by the Committee on Currency Movement (CCM) under the chairmanship of DK Mohanty which was formed in 2016.
ii. All the ATMs will be operated for cash replenishment only with digital One Time Combination (OTC) locks.
iii. To ensure timely alerts and quick response, banks are instructed to roll out a comprehensive e-surveillance mechanism at the ATMs.
iv. If banks fail to adhere to the instructions, they will be liable for a regulatory action including levy of penalty.

IRDAI hiked third party insurance premium for Small-Medium Cars from June 16, 2019
On June 4, 2019, The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) hiked the Third Party (TP) motor insurance premium for small and medium private cars by 12-12.5% for 2019-20. The rates are applicable from June 16, 2019. TP premium for two-wheelers and heavy vehicles was also increased. These powers which are provided to IRDAI are mentioned under Section 14 (2) (i) of the IRDA Act, 1999.
Key Points:
i. Two-wheelers with engine capacities between 150cc and 350cc witnessed the highest percentage increase at 21.11%. Rates were increased from Rs 985 to Rs 1,193. For two-wheelers between 75 cc and 150 cc, it hiked TP rate by 4.44% to Rs 752.
ii. There was a hike of 12% in private cars below 1000 cc engine to Rs 2,072 and 12.50% increase to Rs 3,221 for cars with an engine capacity of 1000-1500 cc.
iii. For goods carriers with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) up to 7,500 kg, TP premium was hiked from Rs 14,390 to Rs 15,746, for vehicles with GVW between 7500 kg to 12,000 kg, the rate was hiked from Rs 24,190 to Rs 26,935 and for vehicles between 12,000 kg to 20,000 kg, it was increased from Rs 32,367 to Rs 33,418.

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) signed a contract with Indian Navy worth Rs 1,188 crore for the supply of Heavyweight Torpedoes – Varunastra. The contract was signed by NP Diwakar, Director (Technical), BDL and Nidhi Chhibber, Joint Secretary & Acquisition Manager (Maritime & Systems), Ministry of Defence, Govt of India in New Delhi.

i. The contract will be executed over the next 42 months.

Bal Sahitya Puraskar & Yuva Puraskar 2019 announced by Sahitya Akademi
On June 14, 2019, Sahitya Akademi, which is announced annually, has selected 22 writers for the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2019 and 23 writers for Yuva Puraskar 2019. The approval for the selection of awardees was given by the Executive Board of the Akademi under the Chairmanship of its President, Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar in Agartala, Tripura. The Award in the form of a casket will contain an engraved copper-plaque and a cheque of Rs.50,000.

i. The awardees were selected based on the recommendations made by the Jury of 3 members each in the concerned language, in accordance with the rules and procedures. Awards were declared on the basis of unanimous/majority vote of the Jury.

Social activist Makarand Tilloo conferred with ‘Save Water Hero Award’
On June 11, 2019, Social activist Makarand Tilloo was conferred with ‘Save Water Hero Award’. He received this award for his efforts to raise awareness about water conservation in the city. The award ceremony was held in Pune, Maharashtra.

An 8-year old Indian girl honoured in UAE’s waste recycling campaign
Nia Tony, an eight-year-old Indian girl was honoured during the 22nd edition of the Emirates Recycling Awards in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for her role in keeping the environment clean by collecting paper wastes.

i. The campaign was organized by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), a non-governmental professional working group based in UAE.
ii. The eco-warrior, Tony was honoured with Eco Champions of Recycling award for her role in saving the environment.
iii. The campaign had different waste categories such as paper, plastic, glass, cans, mobiles and toners. She won the paper section in the individual category for collecting a total of 14,914 kg of paper waste.

National Geographic Society Installed World’s Highest Operating Weather Stations on Mount Everest
On June 14, 2019, National Geographic Society scientists and researchers announced that they installed the world’s highest operating automated weather stations on Mount Everest, including five other automated stations on other parts of the mountain.

Key points:
i
. The other five weather stations that are located in the Mount Everest are in Balcony area (8,430 m), South Col (7,945m) Phortse (3,810 m), Everest Base Camp (5,315 m) and Camp II (6,464 m).
ii. The weather station provides the real-time information about mountain conditions such as data on temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, and wind direction for the benefit of researchers, climbers, and the public.
iii. International team members from eight countries, including 17 Nepali researchers, climbers and story-tellers, headed by the National Geographic Society and Tribhuvan University in partnership with Rolex, conducted a two-month scientific expedition to Mount Everest.

Chinese President Xi Jinping Awarded Kyrgyzstan’s Highest Honour
On June 14, 2019 , Chinese President Xi Jinping was conferred with Kyrgyzstan’s Highest National Award, “Manas Order of the First Degree” in  Kyrgyzstan for developing the Kyrgyzstan-China comprehensive strategic partnership.

i. The award was presented by President of Kyrgyzstan, Sooronbay Jeenbekov.
ii. Xi Jinping, who is on a state visit to Kyrgyzstan and to take part in two-day 19th SCO summit.

i. It is a permanent intergovernmental international organization. It is Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance and has been the primary security pillar of the region.
ii. Its main objective is military cooperation between member states. It is primarily centred on security-related concerns of Central Asian members with main threats being terrorism, separatism and extremism. It also works towards counter-terrorism operations, intelligence-sharing in Central Asia.
iii. It was established in 2001 and is a successor of Shanghai Five mechanism (established in 1996).

ISRO to launch its own space station by 2030: ISRO Chief
On June 13, 2019, The Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) K Sivan announced that India will have its own Space station by 2030. This will help ISRO to send more astronauts to space. A space station is like a habitable artificial satellite that is designed to remain in space and is capable of being inhabited by crew members for an extended period of time.

Key Points:
i. The Project is an extension of Gaganyaan mission.
ii. The proposal to set up the space station will be sent to the central government for approval after India’s first Gaganyaan mission by 2022.
iii. The project will be executed in 5-7 years and the proposed cost of the project is not disclosed.
iv. The space station will weigh nearly 20 tonnes and it will be used to conduct micro-gravity experiments.
v. Initially, it will accommodate astronauts for 15-20 days in space and the station is expected to be placed at an orbit of 400 km above the earth.
vi. Along with India, China also has plans to build a space station of its own.
vii. At present, there is only one fully functional space station in the Earth’s lower orbit, i.e, the International Space Station (I.S.A).

Australia and Qatar to participate in Copa America 2020
The South American Football Federation, CONMEBOL has invited Australia and Qatar to take part in 2020 COPA America. The 2020 Copa America will be held jointly by Colombia and Argentina. The announcement came the day before the 2019 competition kicks off in Sao Paulo in Brazil which facing Bolivia.

Qatar and Australia will join 10 South American nations in the 2020 tournament.
ii. Qatar and Japan are the guest teams at Copa 2019 scheduled to be held in Brazil.

World Elder Abuse Awareness day observed on June 15, 2019
The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is being observed across the globe on 15 June every year. The theme of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2019 is “Lifting Up Voices”.

The purpose of this day is to provide awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. This day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011.

Bihar Government launches Mukhyamantri Vriddha Pension Yojna
On June 14, 2019, The State Government of Bihar launched Mukhyamantri Vriddha Pension Yojna for poor people above 60 years of age which is effective from April 1, 2019. This was launched by the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Key points:
i. Under the Mukhyamantri Vriddha Pension Yojna, Poor people above the age of 60 years will get Rs 400 per month and those people above the age of 80 years will get Rs. 500 per month.
ii. Retired government employees will not be covered under the scheme.
iii. The state government had allocated a fund of Rs 18,000 crore for the scheme.

Green Mizoram Day celebrated on June 11, 2019
In Mizoram, Green Mizoram Day was celebrated throughout the state on June 11, 2019. Chief Minister of the state Zoramthanga planted saplings at the premises of the Assam Rifles headquarters in Aizawl. This day has been observed since June 11, 1999.
Key Points:
i. The day was observed with the distribution, planting trees and taking a pledge to work for a green environment and maintain ecological balance.
ii. Over 38.46 lakh saplings were distributed among the people for planting between 1999 and 2018.
