NATIONAL AFFAIRS

India’s 1st Multinational Air Exercise ‘Tarang Shakti’ commenced at Sulur, TNOn August 6, 2024, ‘Tarang Shakti (Wave of Power) 2024′, largest multilateral air exercise began at the Sulur Air Base in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu (TN).

  • It is the first multinational air exercise to be conducted on India soil after 61 years.

About Tarang Shakti 2024:
i.Aim: To promote interoperability among the air forces of participating nations, enabling them to share best practices and improve operational coordination.
ii.The Tarang Shakti 2024 exercise is being conducted in two phases. The first phase being held in Sular, Tamil Nadu(TN) from August 6 to 14, 2024 and the second phase to be held in Jodhpur, Rajasthan from August 29 to September 14.
iii.Each phase of the drills will involve the participation of 70-80 aircraft, including fighter planes, helicopters, special operations planes, mid-air refuellers and Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft.
Participants:
Around 30 countries, including the United States of America (USA), Germany, France, Australia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom (UK), and Singapore, will showcase their fighter jets. 10 countries which will participate with their assets, and 18 countries as observers.

  • For the first time, German Air Force came to India for an exercise.

i.The UK, France, Germany and Spain will take part in the first phase, while the remaining countries will participate in the second phase.
ii.From Indian side Su-30MKI, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Mirage, Mig29K (Indian Navy/IN), Refueller IL-78 and heavy military transport aircraft C-130 will participate in the exercise.
iii.Eurofighter Typhoons from Germany, Spain and UK, Rafales from France.

  • A -330 MRTT Refuellers, Heavy Military Transport Aircraft A321 and A 400 Ms from Germany, Spain, the UK and France are also participating in the exercise..

Key Points:
i.The exercise focuses on showcasing aerial tactics and operational proficiency, while testing coordination among diverse aircraft formations.
ii.Key challenges include managing data links and ensuring seamless communication to enhance operational efficiency.

Govt Reconstitutes EC & GB of NIPCCD after Over 5 DecadesThe Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD), Government of India (GoI) has reconstituted the Executive Council (EC) and General Body (GB) of the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) after more than 50 years.

  • The reconstitution was approved during a meeting of the EC and a special meeting of the GB of NIPCCD held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi, under the chairpersonship of Union Minister Annpurna Devi, MWCD.

Note: The NIPCCD is an autonomous institute under the MWCD. It is erstwhile known as the Central Institute of Research and Training in Public Cooperation, under the aegis of the Planning Commission.
Reconstitution of Bodies:
i.The old EC and GB that were originally formed in 1966, when NIPCCD was registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, were reconstituted.
ii.The GB now has 22 members, down from 94, and the EC has 13 members, down from 21.

  • Union Minister Annpurna Devi is the President of the GB and Chairperson of EC.

iii.As per the Constitution of the NIPCCD, the GB formulates the overall policies of the institute, while the EC manages administrative affairs of the institute.
Directives:
The Union Minister emphasised NIPCCD’s role in:
i.Spearheading training for all field functionaries of the Ministry;
ii.Conducting research and documentation of pertinent issues on Women & Child Development.
iii.Extending mental health services and Advanced Diploma Courses on Child Guidance and Counseling.
iv.Supporting the Ministry in advocacy of key missions like Poshan 2.0/Saksham Anganwadi, Mission Vatsalya (Child Protection Services & Child Welfare Services), and Mission Shakti (Mission for Protection and Empowerment of Women).

The NIPCCD was established on 28 February 1966 to promote voluntary action in social development. It functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Women and Child Development(MWCD).

DAY-NRLM Launches Million Designers, Billion Dreams with LEAPOn 6th August 2024, the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) launched the ‘Million Designers, Billion Dreams’ initiative in collaboration with Leap Designs. This initiative aims to empower individuals across India with systems design know-how to tackle complex societal challenges.

  • The launch event was chaired by Charanjit Singh, Additional Secretary, Rural Livelihoods (RL), Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD).

Key Points:
i.‘Million Designers, Billion Dreams’ targets rural leaders, frontline change agents, and village entrepreneurs to equip them with systems design skills.
ii.The program aims to enhance participants’ proficiency in design frameworks, promote collaboration among stakeholders, and foster confidence and agency to drive innovation and solve complex challenges.
iii.Expected outcomes include increased number of individuals with systems design know-how, driving innovation across sectors, positioning India as a global leader in design and innovation, sustainable development across India, among others.
iv.LEAP emerged from the multidisciplinary work of the Design Laboratory at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (D-Lab) and the Transform Rural India Foundation (TRIF), with seed investment provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).

RIL Climbs to 86th in Fortune Global 500 List for 2024; Walmart topped the list for 11th consecutive yearAccording to the Fortune Global 500 list for 2024, India’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), led by Mukesh Ambani, has improved its ranking to 86th (2024) from 88th (2023) while retaining its position as the highest-ranked Indian firm for the 21st consecutive year.
i.The United States of America (USA)-based retail and wholesale company, Walmart Inc. has topped the list as the largest company by revenue for the 11th consecutive year. Walmart’s consolidated revenue stood at USD 648.1 billion.
ii.USA based e-commerce company, Amazon.com, Inc and Chinese state-owned electric utility, State Grid Corporation of China have secured the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
iii.9 Indian companies featured in the 2024 rankings. 5 of them are from the public sector – LIC , SBI, ONGC, IOCL and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and the remaining 4 are from private sectors (RIL,Tata Motors, HDFC Bank and Rajesh exports).

Nehru Group & Global Education Outreach Mauritius signed MoU for Education CollaborationCoimbatore (Tamil Nadu)-based Nehru Group of Institutions and Global Education Outreach Mauritius signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for educational collaboration during the India-Mauritius Trade Conference 2024 held in Port Louis, Mauritius.

  • The MoU strengthen the commitment of the Nehru group to exchange of Technology in Education concerning Education 4.0.

Signatories: The MoU was signed by Jayashankar, the founder of the Global Education Outreach Mauritius and Dr. P. Krishnakumar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Secretary, Nehru Group of Institutions.
About India-Mauritius Trade Conference 2024:
i.The India-Mauritius Trade Conference 2024 was organised by the Indian Economic Trade Organization in association with the India Africa Trade Council (IATC).
ii.The motto of the 2024 conference was “Promoting Investment and Growth in partnership with the Mauritius business houses”.
iii.The 2024 Conference was attended by the business community in Mauritius. Around 70 participants representing public, business, educational and healthcare sectors in Mauritius attended the event.
iv.During the event, President of Indian Economic Trade Organization (IETO) Dr. Asif Iqbal welcomed the Keshwar Jankee, Ambassador of Mauritius in Russia and Adv. Dr. P. Krishnadas, Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Nehru Group & Honorary Trade Commissioner of Mauritius to India(South India).
Key Points:
i.During the event, Krishnadas initiated plans to set up the education institutes in Mauritius in the fields of Dairy Farming and Food Processing.
ii.The Indian delegation from the Indian Economic Trade Organisation (IETO) held the meeting with the Minister of Education and Cooperatives in Mauritius to discuss several other opportunities in the sector.
iii.While addressing the event, Krishnadas also reaffirmed his commitment towards working on bolstering trade, commerce, and cooperation between India and Mauritius.
iv.India and Mauritius have been cooperating in various large developmental projects in Mauritius, for instance: the Comprehensive Economic and Commercial Partnership Agreement (CECPA) was signed between India and Mauritius on 22nd February, 2021 and it came into force on 1st April, 2021.

  • Krishnadas, Honorary Trade Commissioner has also pledged to revive these trade mechanisms and work in collaboration with the Trade Ministry and the Ministry of Business and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

BANKING & FINANCE

FPEL received USD 275mn Funding from IFC, ADB, DEG Consortium On August 6, 2024, Hyderabad, Telangana-based renewable energy company Fourth Partner Energy Limited Private Limited(FPEL) has received an investment of USD 275 million (approx. Rs 2280 crore) from a consortium of three Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) comprising International Finance Corporation (IFC), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and DEG (Deutsche Investitions und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH).

  • The World Bank (WB) Group’s IFC, Washington, D.C., the United States of America(USA) is investing USD 125 million, Philippines based ADB providing USD 100 million, and Germany’s Investment Corporation,DEG investing USD 50 million.
  • ADB’s contribution consists of two parts: USD 70 million from its ordinary capital resources and USD 30 million from its Leading Asia’s Private sector Infrastructure Fund 2 (LEAP 2).

This capital injection will support FPEL’s goal to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 3.5 Giga Watt (GW) by 2026.
Key Points:
i.FPEL’s existing investors include Norfund and TPG Inc.

  • Norfund being the largest investor at nearly USD 145 million.

ii.FPEL is set to commission its first 575 Mega Watt (MW) wind-solar hybrid project in Karnataka under the Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) route.
iii.FPEL has an existing installed base of 1.5 Giga Watt(GW) of green assets.

  • FPEL is currently developing additional capacities of 1.2 GW of open access projects in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Tamil Nadu (TN), and Gujarat.

iv.FPEL has already commissioned over 2,000 projects for over 300 marquee clients, including well-known companies such as Walmart, Unilever, and Tata Motors.
Note: India’s renewable energy sector is expected to receive an annual investment of USD 25 billion through 2030.

RBI Issued Master Directions on Treatment of Wilful Defaulters and Large DefaultersOn 30th July 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a Master Directions on the Treatment of Wilful Defaulters and Large Defaulters, under which banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) are required to scrutinize all Non-Performing Asset (NPA) accounts which have outstanding amounts of Rs 25 lakh and above for wilful default. These directions will come into effect after 90 days from the date of publication.

  • Aim: To set up a transparent and non-discriminatory framework for classifying borrowers as “wilful defaulters” and also disseminate credit information about wilful defaulters to caution lenders against extending further finance to them.
  • RBI issued these directions in exercise of powers given under section 45-L of the RBI Act, 1934, Section21, Section 35-A and Section 35-A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and Section 11 of the Credit Information Companies (CICs) (Regulation) Act, 2005.

SEBI Amended Mutual Fund Rules to Curb Front-Running, Insider TradingOn 5th August 2024, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced that it has amended mutual fund norms through a circular issued in exercise of its powers given under Section 11 (1) of the SEBI Act, 1992, read with Regulation 25(27) and Regulation 77 of SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996.

  • As per new norms, the Asset Management Companies (AMCs) are now required to adopt an institutional mechanism to identify and prevent front-running and insider trading in securities.
  • SEBI has directed Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI),Mumbai(Maharashtra) to prescribe the detailed implementation standards within 15 days from the date of this circular
  • It will be mandatory for all AMCs to follow the detailed implementation standards issued by AMFI.

SBI General Insurance & HSBC India Enters into Bancassurance Partnership
Mumbai (Maharashtra) based SBI General Insurance Company Limited (SBI General Insurance) and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, India (HSBC India) have entered into a bancassurance partnership for the distribution of non-life insurance products.
i.Under this partnership, SBI General Insurance aims to provide innovative insurance solutions to HSBC India’s customers across India and the HSBC India will provide its customers with the entire suite of SBI General Insurance’s non-life insurance products, including health, property, motor and travel.
ii.This partnership represents a significant step towards providing accessible and comprehensive insurance solutions, helping increase insurance penetration in India.

Muthoot Capital Services Partners with UK Financial Institution To Boost Electric Vehicle Portfolio
Muthoot Capital Services Limited (MCSL) has announced its partnership with the United Kingdom (UK) based Development Financial Institution (DFI) for raising long term debt funds to promote its Electric Vehicle (EV) portfolio.

  • It is one of Muthoot Capital’s largest partnership deals for sustainability and environmental initiatives.

i.The partnership is facilitated by Mumbai(Maharashtra) based Axis Bank Limited, is worth Rs100 crore, provides sustainable mobility solutions and promotes the use of electric vehicles in India, particularly among lower middle-class consumers.
ii.It is currently involved in electric vehicles through co-lending route, aims to increase its own EV book by Rs 200 crore in the Financial Year 2024-25(FY25).
Note: MCSL is one of India’s fastest-growing Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) and the listed entity of Muthoot Pappachan Group(Muthoot Blue). It is headquartered at Kochi, Kerala.

CIL & GAIL Signed a JV for Setting up Coal to SNG Plant in West Bengal
The Ministry of Coal (MOC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and Natural Gas (MOP & NG) has facilitated a Joint Venture (JV) agreement between two Maharatna CPSEs, Coal India Limited (CIL),Kolkata (West Bengal, WB) and GAIL (India) Limited (GAIL),New Delhi, (Delhi) to set up a Coal-to-Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) project in West Bengal utilising Surface Coal Gasification (SCG) technology.
i.The SNG plant which is set to be located in the Raniganj area of Eastern Coalfields Limited(ECL), WB will have a production capacity of 80,000 Normal Meter Cubed(Nm3) per hour of SNG, translating to an annual output of 633.6 million Nm3.

  • The plant requires 1.9 million tons of coal per year, which will be supplied by CIL.

ii.As per the agreement, CIL will hold 51%, while GAIL will own the remaining 49%.
iii.The JV will be incorporated as a private limited company with the initial paid-up share capital of Rs 1 lakh and an authorized share capital of Rs 11 crore.
iv.The new plant will play a pivotal role in securing raw materials, reducing India’s dependency on natural gas imports, and promoting the Atma Nirbhar Bharat mission.
Note: SNG is a fuel gas primarily consisting of methane (CH4), which serves as a feedstock for production of various chemicals and fertilisers.

APPOINTMENTS & RESIGNATIONS

Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus Named Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s Interim GovernmentOn 6th August 2024, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi Banker, has been appointed as the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government by the Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Note: Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2006 for their work to “create economic and social development from below”
Background:
i.The appointment was made following the meeting led by the President of Bangladesh with chiefs of three three services and a 13-member delegation of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM).
ii.The appointment comes a day after Bangladesh Prime Minister(PM) Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled Bangladesh following a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising.
Note:  Sheikh Hasina was the longest serving PM in Bangladesh history, until her resignation on 5 August 2024. She served as 1st term as PM from 1996 to 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024.
About Muhammad Yunus:
i.In 1972, Muhammad Yunus was appointed professor of economics at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.
ii.In 1983, he established the Grameen Bank (GB) (Village Bank) in Bangladesh and served as its Managing Director (MD) till 2011.
iii.He was appointed as the member of the International Advisory Group (IAG) for the Fourth World Conference on Women(4WCW) (1993 to 1995) by then United Nations (UN) Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
iii.He also served on the Global Commission of Women’s Health, the Advisory Council for Sustainable Economic Development and the UN Expert Group on Women and Finance.
v.In 1996, he served as Cabinet Minister (Advisor) in the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh.
Awards/Honours:
i.He was honoured with the Ramon Magsaysay Award in the Field of “Community Leadership” in 1984.
ii.In 1987, he was awarded the Independence Day Award, the highest civilian national award of Bangladesh for his outstanding contribution to rural development.
iii.He was awarded the Mohamed Sahabdeen Award for Socio-Economic Science (1993) in Sri Lanka.
iv.In 1994, he was awarded the World Food Prize by the World Food Prize Foundation, in the the United States of America (USA).
vi.He was honoured with the “Franklin D. Roosevelt Freedom Award” by the Roosevelt Institute, Middleburg, the Netherlands in 2006.
vii.In 2006, he was honoured with the “Seoul Peace Prize” by the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation, Seoul, Korea.

Nobel Prize Winning Physicist Tsung-Dao Lee Passed AwayNobel Prize winning Chinese-American physicist Tsung-Dao Lee passed away at the age of 97 in San Francisco, California, the United States of America (USA). He was born on 24th November 1926 in Shanghai, China.

  • In 1957, Lee (31) became the second youngest scientist to receive the Nobel Prize for Physics. 
  • He shared the prize with Chen Ning Yang (C N Yang), Chinese theoretical physicist “for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles”.

About Tsung-Dao Lee:
i.Tsung-Dao Lee is well-known for Lee–Yang theorem, theory of particle physics, the theory of the nucleus, and statistical physics.

  • The Lee-Yang Theorem describe phase transitions in large physical systems.

ii.He joined as an Assistant Professor in Columbia University, New York, United States of America (USA) in 1953. In 1956, at the age of 29, he became the youngest-ever full professor in the University’s faculty history.
iii.He developed a model, which is a framework for studying various quantum phenomena known as the ‘Lee model’.
iv.He has published over 300 scientific papers and several books.
v.He has served as a member of many organisations which includes National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAA&S), the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).
Awards:
Tsung-Dao Lee won many awards which includes the Albert Einstein Award in Science (1957), the Rumford Prize (1980), the Galileo Galilei Medal (1979), Liberty Award and the National Medal of Science (1986).
Note: Lawrence Bragg (25), was the youngest recipient Nobel Prize for Physics. He won the award along with his father, William Henry Bragg in 1915.

PM Narendra Modi Receives Parimal Nathwani’s Book On Gir And Asiatic Lions
The Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has received the first copy of ‘Call of the Gir, a coffee table book on Gir National Park (Gujarat) and Asiatic lions,  written by Parimal Dhirajlal Nathwani, the Member of Parliament (MP), Rajya Sabha (Andhra Pradesh).

  • He dedicated the book to PM for being the visionary behind ‘Project Lion and Lion@2047: Vision for Amrit Kaal.

i.This is the 2nd coffee table book of Nathwani which is published by Quignog, the internationally recognized publisher.

  • His first coffee table book ‘Gir Lions: Pride of Gujarat’ was published by Times Group Books (TGB) in 2017.

ii.The book is based on Gir’s landscapes, noted for the Asiatic lions and it combines vibrant photography and narratives to highlight the urgency of conservation efforts.
iii.It has a message from the PM and Anant Ambani, Director of Reliance Industries Limited.

10th National Handloom Day – 7 August 2024 National Handloom Day is annually observed across India on 7 August to honour the handloom weaving community engaged in the handloom sector and highlight the handloom industry’s contribution to India’s socioeconomic development.

  • The Day is also celebrated to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which was launched on 7 August 1905.

i.In 2015, the Government of India (GoI) decided to designate the 7th of August every year, as the National Handloom Day.
ii.The 10th National Handloom Day was celebrated on 7 August 2024, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Delhi. Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Vice President of India was the Chief Guest of the event.
iii.“VIRAASAT”, a fortnight-long exhibition dedicated to celebrating the 10th National Handloom Day has been organised by the National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd.(NHDC) under the MoT from 3 to 16 August 2024 at Handloom Haat, Janpath in New Delhi, Delhi.

National Javelin Day 2024 – August 7National Javelin Day is annually observed across India on August 7 to commemorate the remarkable achievement of Neeraj Chopra during the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where he secured the gold medal for India in javelin throw event.

  • The day aims to promote the sport of javelin throw and to acknowledge its significance in athletics.
  • 7th August 2024 marks the observance of 3rd National Javelin Day.

Background:
i.On August 11, 2021, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) declared 7th August of every year as the National Javelin Day.
ii.The first ever National Javelin Day was observed on 7th August 2022.
Significance of 7th August:
i.On 7th August 2021, Neeraj Chopra won the Men’s javelin throw gold with the throw of 87.58m at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, held from 23rd July to 8th August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

About Neeraj Chopra:
i.Neeraj Chopra, an Indian track athlete and field athlete, won his first-ever International medal (Silver) in the Youth Olympics Qualification, Bangkok, Thailand in 2014.
ii.He was enrolled as a Junior Commissioned Officer(JCO) in the rank of Naib Subedar in 4 Rajputana Rifles unit of the Indian Army in 2016.

  • He was promoted to Subedar in 2018 after winning gold in the Asian Games 2018 and Commonwealth Games 2018.

iii.In 2022, he registered his best throw and a national record (India) at the Stockholm Diamond League in Sweden with 89.94m.
Awards: 
i.Neeraj Chopra received Arjuna award (Athletics) in 2018, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (2021), and Padma Shri (Sports) in 2022.
ii.He also received Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2020 and Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in 2022.
Paris Olympics 2024:
i.On August 6 2024, Neeraj Chopra was qualified for the javelin throw final at the Paris Olympics with an 89.34m throw (Group B) at the Stade de France, France. Paris Olympics 2024 is being held from July 26 to August 11, France.
ii.Along with Neeraj Chopra, Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan also qualified for the men’s javelin final with a throw of 86.59m.
