PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates & lays Foundation Stones of Development Projects Worth ∼Rs 21000cr in Vadodara, Gujarat
i.On June 17-18, 2022, the Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi visited Gujarat to inaugurate the redeveloped temple of Shree Kalika Mata at Pavagadh Hill, he will also visit Virasat Van and to participate in Gujarat Gaurav Abhiyan Program at Vadodara, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of projects worth over Rs 21,000 crore.
ii.The PM dedicated and laid the foundation stone of various Railway projects worth over Rs 16,000 crore which will help in lowering logistics cost and boost industry and agriculture sector in the region.
iii.The PM also inaugurated the redeveloped Shree Kalika Mata temple atop the Pavagadh hill in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat. It is one of the oldest temples in the area.
iv.PM virtually released a book ‘Bhartiya Samvidhan: Ankahi Kahani (Indian constitution: untold stories)’ by senior journalist Ram Bahadur Rai at Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi, Delhi. It was published by Prabhat publication.

NSDC & MoHUA Launches NIPUN for Skill Training of Construction Workers
On 20th June 2022 Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri launched project NIPUN (National Initiative for Promoting Upskilling of Nirman workers) , an initiative of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the flagship scheme of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).
- National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), the nodal agency under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship(MSDE), will be the Implementation Partner for the project NIPUN.It is responsible for the overall execution of the training, monitoring and candidate tracking.
- Aim – To train more than one lakh construction workers through fresh skilling and upskilling programmes and provide them with opportunities in foreign countries.

GE Steam Power Signs USD 165 Million Pact with BHEL To Supply Three Nuclear Steam Turbines
GE Steam Power, a world energy leader, has inked a USD 165 million pact with state-run engineering firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) to supply three nuclear steam turbines.
The pact is for the supply of three nuclear steam turbines out of six units for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) domestic nuclear program- phase 1 being developed at Gorakhpur in Haryana (units – 1 to 4 [Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP)] and Kaiga in Karnataka (Kaiga Generating Station-5&6).
Domestic Program of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)
NPCIL’s domestic programme comprises the development of 12 units of 700 Mwe (Megawatts electric) nuclear reactors using their own nuclear reactor technology, i.e., Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWR).
- In total, it will provide India with 8.4 GW (gigawatts) of Carbon dioxide (CO2) -free electricity, enough to power more than 14 million homes.
Previous Agreement Between GE Steam Power & BHEL
GE Steam Power and BHEL inked a business cooperation agreement as well as a License and Technology Transfer Agreement in 2018 to enable them to manufacture nuclear steam turbines with a capacity of 700 MW (megawatts).
- Through this collaboration, the two companies have established themselves to meet India’s demand for a lower-carbon energy source.
Significance of the Pact
i.GE Steam Power will manufacture nuclear steam turbines at its facility in Sanand, Gujarat, as part of the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
- These turbines are being engineered and manufactured with an improved design that will increase output and suit the customer’s needs.
ii.The steam turbine technology of GE Steam Power is currently used in 50% of the world’s nuclear power plants, generating 200 GW for the global grid.
iii. In collaboration with BHEL, GE Steam Power has provided nuclear steam turbines for the ongoing NPCIL projects at Kakrapar in Gujarat [Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP)] and Rawatbhatha in Rajasthan [Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP)], which would supply 2.8 GW of CO2-free energy when completed.
DoT Launches Design-Linked Incentive Scheme, Extends Telecom PLI by 1 year
The Department of Telecom (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications launched an incentive scheme for design-led manufacturers and extended the base year for the calculation of Rs 12,195 crore Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme by one year and raised the incentive rate by an additional 1 percent.
- The Government has opened applications from 21st June 2022 to 20th July 2022.
- Objective – To build a strong ecosystem for 5G.
Key Changes:
The guidelines for the PLI scheme for telecom and networking products have been amended to introduce the Design-led Manufacturing with additional incentive rates.
i.The existing PLI beneficiaries will be given an option to choose between the financial year 2021-22 or 2022-23 as the 1st year of incentive.
ii.The incentives will be based on incremental sales of the manufactured goods and range between 4% to 7% for different categories over the years.
- MSMEs will get an additional 1 percent incentive in the first, second, and third years.
iii.The design-led manufacturing scheme requires an investment threshold of Rs 10 crores for MSMEs and Rs 100 crores for non-MSMEs, excluding land and building cost.
iv.Applicants can avail incentives for five years commencing from April 1, 2022 up to FY 2025-26.
v.Removes the condition of 15% cap on investment to be made for research and development.
vi.The incentives will be given from the Rs 4,000 crore which is left out from total outlay.
Background:
i.The incentive is part of the PLI scheme has been proposed in the Union Budget 2022-23, which was notified on 24th February 2021.
ii.In February 2021, the DoT had notified the PLI scheme for 31 companies, including Nokia, Foxconn, Akashastha Technologies, ITI and HFCL Group.
- Additionally, DoT has also approved 11 new telecom and networking products.

Pakistan Stays on FATF ‘Grey List’ Subject to On-site Verification
June 2022 plenary session of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) was held in Berlin, Germany.According this session, Pakistan will continue to be on the ‘Grey List’ of countries under increased monitoring of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a France-based international money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog.
- Paris-based FATF added Pakistan in 2018 to the “grey list,” which is composed of countries with a high risk of money laundering and terrorism financing but which have formally committed to working with the task force to make changes.
- FATF removed Malta from its “grey list” but added Gibraltar.
Key Highlights:
i.The Grey List helps country to focus on setting standards and promoting effective implementation of legal, regulatory and operational measures for combating money laundering, terrorist financing and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.
- As a result of the Grey List, it is difficult for Pakistan to get financial aid from world bodies like the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
ii.In June 2022 the FATF made the initial determination that Pakistan has completed its two action plans, covering 34 items, and warrants an on-site visit to verify that that the implementation of Pakistan’s AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and CFT (Combatting the Financing of Terrorism) reforms has begun and is being sustained and that the necessary political commitment remains in place to sustain implementation and improvement in the future.
iii.FATF blacklist is a list of countries that the intragovernmental organization considers non-cooperative in the global effort to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism.
- North Korea and Iran are the only two countries on FATF black list.

Piyush Goyal inaugurates ‘Mango Festival’ in Belgium
On 17 June, Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, has inaugurated a “Mango Festival” in Brussels, Belgium to raise awareness among Europeans and establish a market for Indian mangoes in Europe.
- India is a big supplier of mangoes to the rest of the globe, but most of the mangoes end up in the Middle East rather than Europe. This is the first time it has been hosted in Belgium.

Payments Vision 2025 released by RBI’s DPSS aiming 3x Increase in Digital Payments
ii.It is a progressive document aiming to establish India as a powerhouse of payments globally.
iii.There are various specific initiatives proposed under the five goalposts with 10 expected outcomes during the Vision period including volume of cheque-based payments to be less than 0.25% of the total retail payments; and more than 3x increase in number of digital payment transactions.

SEBI Forms Hybrid Securities Advisory Committee (HySAC) Chaired by KV Kamath
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), India’s market regulator, has established a 20-member Hybrid Securities Advisory Committee (HySAC), which will make recommendations for boosting the growth of such instruments, including measures focusing on ease of issuance and attracting domestic & global capital.
- Kundapur Vaman Kamath(KV Kamath), the Chairperson of the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development, will chair the committee.
Hybrid Securities Advisory Committee (HySAC)
i. In addition, top-level officials from Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and finance, as well as legal experts and SEBI representatives, make up the 20-member committee.

UPI-Based Digital Payments to Enter the Europe; NIPL To Launch UPI, Rupay Cards in France
The NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lyra Network of France for the acceptance of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and RuPay Cards in France, giving a boost to the digital payment ecosystem.
- To expand UPI services, NIPL is in talks with countries in the United States, West Asia, and Europe.
- The UPI payment system is currently available in countries such as Bhutan, Singapore, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL)
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) was incorporated on April 3, 2020 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
- NIPL is dedicated to the deployment of RuPay (domestic card scheme) and UPI (mobile payment solution) outside of India.
Backdrop: Viva Technology 2022 event in Paris, France
On June 16, 2022, Union Communication Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw represented India at Europe’s largest start-up conference, Viva Technology 2022, in Paris, France, where he announced that UPI and RuPay card services will be available in France soon as a result of the MoU between NIPL, India, and Lyra Network of France.
- India has been recognized as the ‘country of the year’ at Viva Technology 2022.
He also inaugurated the India pavilion, which is hosting 65 Indian start-ups, a significant step toward “digital payments inclusion” as “India’s UPI goes global.”
Note: This strategic partnership is expected to be a game-changer in the digital payment ecosystem, since India processes 5.5 billion UPI transactions per month.
Significance of the MoU
i. Indian tourists in France can make seamless payments using the new UPI payment mechanism.
ii.NPCI previously signed a similar agreement with PayNow, a Singapore-based company. In March 2022, Nepal adopted the UPIpayment mechanism for digital transactions.
iii. RuPay Cards, UPI, and the Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM) are among the well-known payment products managed by NPCI.
iv.The MoU will benefit both UPI and RuPay Cards.
Recent Data on UPI
i. In May 2022, UPI processed about 6 billion transactions worth USD 134.3 billion(Rs 10.4 lakh crore).
ii.From April to June 2022, UPI payments platform recorded a 6.6 %month-on-month increase in transaction volume.
- The platform has crossed about 80% of the transaction volume of 2021 in the first five months of 2022.
iii. NIPL entered the UAE in April 2022 following partnering with Mashreq Bank’s payment subsidiary, NeoPay.
iv.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated in its annual report published in May 2022 that it is working on the use of UPI for cross-border remittances across jurisdictions.
- To improve cross-border payment arrangements, RBI has explored tying UPI with similar systems in other jurisdictions, especially in G20 countries.
v.The RBI recently permittedlinking credit cards with the UPI. The service will be limited to RuPay cards for the time being.So far, only debit cards have been linked to the payment system.

ICG Inducts Indigenous Developed ALH Mk-III in Chennai
On 20th June 2022 the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICGs) inducted a first made in India Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Mark III aircraft in the Coast Guard Region East which is headquartered in Chennai,Tamilnadu.The ALH is an indigenous aircraft designed and developed by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL).
- This is the first induction into the newly created ‘840 Squadron’ that is to be based in Chennai, three more choppers of the same variant are to be inducted.
- The new aircraft was received at the Coast Guard Air Station, Chennai, with a traditional water cannon salute and Inspector General A P Badola, TM, Commander, Coast Guard Region East, welcomed the aircraft and crew.
Key Highlights
i.The ALH MK III has the multifold capability of Beyond Visual Range detection, using the state-of-the-art radar integrated with long range imaging and identification using the Electro Optical Pod and Automatic Identification System.
- Three more ALHs will be added to the inventory of ‘840 Squadron’ shortly.
- Until now, HAL has delivered 13 out of 16 such aircraft to the ICG.
ii.Additionally, the aircraft is equipped to carry out target neutralisation and through concerted aerial efforts, the state-of-the-art helicopter will address India’s multi-faceted marine interests within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Achievements:
i.Rahul Srivatshav reached the 2500 Elo live rating mark after drawing his 8th round game against Grandmaster Levan Pantsulaia in the Cattolica event.
ii.He had already secured 5 GM norms and achieved the title when he crossed the rating threshold of 2500.
- To become a GM, a player must secure 3 GM norms and cross the live rating of 2500 Elo points.
Note – In January 2022, Bharath Subramaniyam became India’s 73rd GM. Viswanathan Anand became India’s 1st GM in 1988.

India’s Anahat Singh wins Asian Junior Squash title in U-15 category
Indian player Anahat Singh, 14-year-old, won the gold medal in the girls Under-15 category at the 29th Asian Junior Squash Individual Championships defeating Kwong Ena of Hong Kong 3-0 in the final. The tournament was held in Pattaya, Thailand between 15 – 19 June 2022.
i.Anahat reached the finals without dropping a single game in the tournament and had also defeated Malaysian top seed Whitney Isabelle Wilson 3-0 in the semi-finals.
ii.So far, Anahat has won 46 national circuit titles, two national championships and eight international titles. She is the only Indian girl to win the US Junior Open in any category and the British Junior Open.

The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of Yoga(IDY) is annually observed across the globe on 21st June to create awareness about the importance of Yoga and promote the benefits of practising yoga.
- 21st June 2022 marks the observance of the 8th International Day of Yoga.
- The theme of International Day of Yoga 2022 is “Yoga for Humanity”.
Background:
i.The United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) adopted the resolution A/RES/69/131 on 11th December 2014 and proclaimed the 21st June of every year as the International Day of Yoga.
ii.The first ever International Day of Yoga was observed at the United Nations on 21st June 2015.

- On the occasion of the 8th IDY, Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi participated in the Mass yoga Demonstration at Mysore Palace ground, Mysuru, Karnataka.
- As a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, Mass yoga demonstrations are organised at 75 iconic locations across India under the leadership of 75 Union Ministers.
- As a part of the 8th International Day of Yoga, the government of India has envisaged a unique, one of a king and innovative programme “The Guardian Ring” to celebrate the movement of the Sun, underlining the concept of ‘One Sun, One Earth’.
World Hydrography Day 2022 – June 21
World Hydrography Day is annually celebrated across the globe on 21st June to create awareness about Hydrography and its importance in improving knowledge of the seas and oceans.
- The theme for World Hydrography Day 2022 is “Hydrography – contributing to the United Nations Ocean Decade”.

i.World Hydrography Day was approved and implemented as an annual celebration by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). IHO has been celebrating World Hydrography Day since 2005.

NCPCR Celebrates Elimination of Child Labour Week – 12th to 20th June 2022
National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) celebrated the Elimination of Child Labour Week from 12th to 20th June 2022 in the honour of World Day Against Child Labour in the 75 places as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The week is observed to focus on the problem of child labour and find ways to eradicate it.
- During the week, rescue operations in 75 places across India, where children are involved in labour work (scrap & automobile markets) were conducted with the help of authorities like the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR), District authorities, Child Welfare Committee and other stakeholders.
- NCPCR is in the process of creating a separate link for child labour for their rescue and rehabilitation process in the Balswaraj Portal of the NCPCR.
- NCPCR constituted by the Government of India is a statutory body under section 3 of the Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005

Andhra Pradesh Govt signs MoU with Byju’s for school education
Andhra Pradesh government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with educational tech company Byju’s to impart quality education to students of government schools.
i.The MoU was signed by school education commissioner S Suresh Kumar on behalf of the state with Susmit Sarkar, vice-president (public policy) of Byju’s, in the presence of chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy
ii.Under this partnership, the quality content provided by Byju’s will make it easier for children to understand in the visual medium, and also help in achieving better results for the students studying between class 4-10 in government schools across the State.
iii.The government would provide Tabs to guide the students who are currently studying class 8 and will be appearing for Class X exam in CBSE in 2025. The government will be distributing the Tabs to 4.7 lakh students in September at a cost of ₹500 crores.
