Malayan Giant Squirrel could fall by 90% in India by 2050 ; ZSI’s 1st of its kind Surveynumbers of the Malayan Giant Squirrel could decline by 90 per cent

According to a First-of-its-kind survey conducted by Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Malayan Giant Squirrel or Black Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor) could fall by 90% in India by 2050 due to shrinking of its original habitat zone.
i.At Present only 43.38% of the Original habitat in  India is favourable for its living. The favourable zone of its habitat may decline to 2.94% by 2050.
ii.This would mean that, by 2050 the habitat of the squirrels will be restricted only to Southern Sikkim and North Bengal.
iii.The squirrel is considered to be an indicator of forest health, the decline in squirrel’s population reflects declining Forest area.
Main causes of shrinking of Habitat:
Deforestation, fragmentation of forests, crop cultivation and over-harvesting of food, illegal trade in wildlife, hunting for consumption.
Conservation Status:
i.It is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) 2016 list.
ii.It is a protected species under Schedule II of India’s Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Lakshadweep becomes India’s First 100% Organic Union Territory

Indian Island region, Lakshadweep becomes India’s first 100% organic Union Territory in the country, and second in the country only after Sikkim. This comes after the UT received proper certifications and declarations under the Centre’s Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (organic farming improvement programme).
Key Highlights:
i.Synthetic chemical usage has stopped completely since 2005.
ii.Majority of the UT has already got certified under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP)since 2011.
iii.Entire 32 kms land is categorised under organic area.

NSDC Signs MoU with BYJU’S to Support Skilling of Teachers and Trainers

On December 10, 2020 The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BYJU’S to support the skilling of teachers and trainers. The partnership is as part of Skill India Mission.
Aim – To empower teachers and trainers with skills and digital tools so as to make learning very effective, engaging and personalised for children and youth.
Benefits of the Partnership:
i.As part of this partnership, BYJU’S will provide free access to its educational content and tools to help the teachers.
ii.In addition, BYJU’S will share its digital educational content (scholastic and non-scholastic) with the NSDC Ecosystem as free licenses.

IESA, UNIDO tie up to Boost Energy Storage Innovations in India

i.On December 10, 2020, the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) collaborated to promote innovations in energy storage in India.
ii.The collaboration was done on the lines of the launch of the 4th round of innovation challenge by UNIDO’s Facility of Low Carbon Technology Deployment (FLCTD) to support and encourage new innovations in Indian energy storage and e-mobility space.
iii.The IESA will act as a supporting partner for this innovation challenge.
iv.There will be grant of up to USD 50,000 for winning technologies, and recognition from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, UNIDO and IESA.

Government launches Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme to boost India’s Infrastructure

On 11th December, 2020 Finance Ministry notified the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme to provide financial support to Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in selected Infrastructure projects. The selection of Private companies will be done through transparent, open and competitive bidding process.
i.Aim- To assist infrastructure projects under Public Private Partnership (PPPs) in India through financial support.
ii.Fund Sanction
Upto Rs 200 crore- Sanctioned by the Empowered Committee (EC) headed by Economic affairs secretary(Present Economic Affairs Secretary is Shri Tarun Bajaj).
Over Rs 200 crore- Approved by Empowered Committee with Finance Minister’s approval

India drops to 2nd Position in BNEF’s 2020 Climatescope survey; Chile grabs the top spot

According to Climatescope Survey ‘Emerging Markets Outlook 2020 : Energy Transition in the World’s Fastest Growing economies’ released by Bloomberg New Energy Finance Limited (BNEF) India with a score of 2.61 dropped to the 2nd position in the 2020 survey due to decline in Clean Energy Investment. India’s investment declined from 32% in 2017 to 12% in 2018-2019. Chile topped the survey rankings with a score of 2.85, Brazil came third with a score of 2.44.
i.China (Mainland) & India remain the biggest markets for clean energy  investment
ii.BNEF has surveyed more 108 emerging markets and for the first time 29 Developed nations for the Climatescope survey project.
iii.This is the 9th year of the Climatescope project.
iv.India topped the BNEF’s Climatescope Emerging Markets Ranking in 2019.

17th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on South-South Cooperation in Population and Development held Virtually; Harsh Vardhan Participated

i.On December 8, 2020, the 17th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on South-South Cooperation in Population and Development titled “Nairobi Commitments and the 2030 Agenda: Taking stock and looking ahead to post COVID-19 Crisis” was held virtually.
ii.The ministerial session for the same was held on “Promoting South-South Cooperation for Attaining Nairobi Commitments and the Agenda 2030” which was chaired by Dr. Faisal Sultan, The Federal Minister of the National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination of the Government of Pakistan.

RBI Released Draft Guidelines for NBFCs’ Dividend Payouts: December 2020

i.The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its recent 4th Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) 2020-21 announced to issue guidelines for Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) with regard to distribution of dividend.
ii.Therefore on December 9, 2020, the apex bank released the “Draft Circular on Declaration of Dividend by NBFCs” to ensure greater transparency and uniformity in practice. It is open for comments by December 24, 2020.
iii.The guidelines will be applicable for dividend to be declared for the financial year beginning April 01, 2020 (FY 2020-21) onwards.
iv.NBFCs should comply with the provisions of Section 45 IC of the RBI Act, 1934.

DRDO designed submachine gun ‘5.56X30 mm JVPC’ undergoes successful Trials

On 7th December, 2020, 5.56 X 30 mm Joint Venture Protective Carbine (JVPC) designed by Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a lab of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully finished the final phase of user trials.  The Gun will now be inducted into the Indian Army.
i.Weapon is set to be manufactured at Small Arms Factory, Kanpur, and the Ammunition will be manufactured at Ammunition Factory, Kirkee Pune.
ii.The gun met all the parameters of Indian Army’s GSQR (General Staff Qualitative Requirements) during the trials.
Features of the Gun:
i.JVPC is a Gas Operated Semi Bull-pup automatic weapon and is capable of firing around 700 rpm (rounds per minute).
ii.It has a range of 100 metres and weighs 3 Kilograms.
iii.It is equipped with features like low recoil, retractable Butt, better ergonomic design, single hand firing capability, and multiple Picatinny rails.
iv.The gun is suited for Counter Insurgency/Counter Terrorism operations.
v.The Gun has passed the trials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the procurement of the guns has been initiated by CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces) & many state police organisations.

Ischaemum janarthanamii: A New Species of Indian Muraingrasses Discovered in Goa by ARI Researchers

A team of researchers of Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) led by Dr. Mandar Datar and Dr.Ritesh Kumar Choudhary have discovered a tough novel new species of Indian Muraingrasses(Genus Ischaemum) named Ischaemum janarthanamii in Goa in the Western Ghats.
Important Info:

  • The new species Ischaemum janarthanamii, is named after M. K. Janarthanam, Professor of Botany, Goa University to honour his contribution to the Indian grass taxonomy and documentation of the floristic diversity of Goa state.
  • The research paper about this species was published in Annales Botanici Fennici, a Finland based journal.

Note– In 2017, monsoon the 1st collection of this new species was made.

i.It grows on a low altitude lateritic plateaus in the suburbs of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park, Goa.
ii.It has adapted to survive the harsh conditions, low nutrient availability, and blossoms every monsoon.

i.Indian Muraingrasses are known for their ecological and economic importance.
ii.Western Ghats is one of the 4 global biodiversity hotspots of India.
iii.Globally, 85 species have been discovered from Ischaemum, of which 61 species are exclusively found in India
iv.Western Ghats has 40 species with the highest number of this genus.

AP CM Jagan Mohan Reddy launches ‘Jagananna Jeeva Kranthi’ scheme – distribution of sheep, goats to women

On December 10, 2020, Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister (CM) Jagan Mohan Reddy virtually launched the ‘Jagananna Jeeva Kranthi’ scheme worth INR 1, 869 Crores for distribution of  2, 49, 151 sheeps, goats for improving the living standards of women.
Objective:
To develop self-reliance among women.
Beneficiaries:
Women belonging to Backward Classes (BC), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) in the age group of 45-60 years.
Gist of the Scheme:
i.Each Unit will consist of  15 Sheeps or Goats.
ii.They will be distributed in 3 phases.
iii.AP Government has signed into an Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) with Allana Group for the procurement of sheeps and goats and as a platform for marketing the meat products
iv.AP Government also launched the distribution of 4.69 lakh units of cows and buffaloes worth INR 3, 500 crores.

Maharashtra Govt Signs 1st of its kind MoU with Cornell University to Set up World-Class Incubation Centre in Maharashtra to Train Entrepreneurs

i.On December 10, 2020 Maharashtra Govt signed a 1st of its kind Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Cornell University, to set up a world-class incubation centre in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.Maharashtra becomes the 1st state in India to set up an incubation centre.

  • This is also the first time for Cornell University to set up an incubation centre outside the US.

UP government launches scheme for Tharu tribe

Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government has launched a scheme whereby Tourists can live in the traditional habitats of Tharu Tribe. The scheme is aimed to create jobs, increase the economic independence of the tribal population and to put Tharu villages on Global Tourism maps. As part of scheme UP Government will connect Tharu villages in the districts of Balrampur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur and Pilibhit bordering Nepal along with the home stay scheme of the UP Forest Department.
