CSL launches 3 ASW SWC ‘Mahe, Malvan & Mangrol’ for IN; Delivery of 3rd ACTCM Barge, LSAM 17 Made

Cochin Shipyard launches 3 anti-submarine watercrafts 'MAHE, MALVAN AND MANGROL' for Indian NavyCochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) launched the first three ships of the 8 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC) project namely Indian Naval Ship (INS) Mahe, INS Malvan, and INS Mangrol at its Kochi Yard in Kerala for the Indian Navy (IN).

  • The 3rd Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge, LSAM 17 (Yard 127) has been delivered to IN.

Highlights:

i.INS Mahe was launched by Mrs Anjali Bahl in the presence of VAdm (Vice Admiral) Puneet Bahl, Commandant Indian Naval Academy (INA).

ii.INS Malvan was launched by Mrs Kangana Berry in the presence of VAdm Suraj Berry, Commander in Chief (C-in-C)

iii.INS Mangrol was launched by Mrs Zarine Lord Singh in the presence of VAdm Sanjay Jasjit Singh, Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS).

Specifications

i.They  are 78 meters (m) long, 11.36m wide, and have a draught of about 2.7m, displacement about 896 tons, and can reach a maximum speed of 25 knots and endurance of 1800 nautical miles.

ii.They are equipped with indigenously developed SONARS (Sound Navigation and Ranging) for underwater surveillance.

Key Points:

i.Mahe Class to replace Abhay Class ASW Corvettes, designed for anti-submarine operations, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and Mine Laying Operations including subsurface surveillance.

  • It incorporates cutting-edge, domestically developed underwater sensors with over 80% indigenous content.

ii.The newly launched ships will undergo fitment and completion over the next 12-18 months before being handed over to IN.

  • The first delivery expected by November 2024.

iii.In 2019, a contract was signed between Ministry of Defence (MoD) and CSL for building 8 ASW SWC.

Delivery of 3rd ACTCM Barge, LSAM 17 (Yard 127) Made

The 3rd Ammunition Cum Torpedo Cum Missile (ACTCM) Barge, LSAM 17 (Yard 127) has been delivered to IN in the presence of Shankar Mukharjee, INAS (Indian Naval Armament Service), AGM Naval Armament Depot (NAD), Karanja in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  • This Barge’s all major and auxiliary equipment/systems sourced from indigenous manufacturers.

Key Points:

i.With this, the Contract for 11 x ACTCM Barge with M/s Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, an MSME (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprise) in line with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, is concluded.

ii.Two Barges already delivered by the MSME shipyard under Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) rules.

iii.ACTCM Barges support IN’s operational commitments, aiding in article and ammunition embarkation/disembarkation at jetties and outer harbors.

i.On 4th October 2023, Union Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministry of Defence(MoD), launched Swavlamban 2023 (Swavlamban 2.0), the 2nd edition of the Indian Navy’s Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) seminar, in New Delhi, Delhi. The 2-day seminar was held from 4th to 5th October 2023.

ii.The Security Exercise Prasthan 2023 was carried out by Commodore Rajneesh Sharma Naval Officer-in-Charge (NOIC), under the aegis of Eastern Naval Command, Indian Navy (IN) in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh (AP).
