CSE’s State of India’s Environment Report, 2021: India Ranked 117 on achieving SDGs

India slips two spots to rank 117 on 17 Sustainable Development GoalsAs per the State of India’s Environment Report, 2021, which was released by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), India’s rank has dropped by 2 places from last year’s 115 to 117 on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are adopted as a part of the 2030 agenda by 193 United Nations(UN) member states in 2015.

  • The overall SDG score of India is 61.9 out of 100 and it ranks below four South Asian countries viz, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
  • Cause for the drop in rank: Major challenges that are prevailing in India such as, ending hunger and achieving food security (SDG 2), achieving gender equality (SDG 5), and building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation (SDG 9).

Key Facts over ‘State of India’s Environment Report, 2021’:

a.State-wise preparedness: 

i.Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh were the best states with an overall score which are on the path to achieving the SDGs.

ii.Jharkhand and Bihar were the least prepared states to meet the SDGs by the target year, 2030. Jharkhand and Bihar lag in 5 and 7 out of the 17 SDGs.

b.Internal Displacement:

i.As per the report, in 2020, 39 lakh people in India were displaced due to climate disasters and conflicts, making it the 4th worst-hit country in the world to have such a high number of internal displacements(ID).

ii.The top 3 countries with high ID were China, the Philippines and Bangladesh, where over 4 million people were displaced.

iii.Major cause: In 2020, 4.05 crore people were displaced in the world, out of which, 3.07 crore (76 percent) people were displaced due to climate disasters and 98 lakhs due to conflicts and violence.

iv.An average of around 3.73 million people were displaced in a year between 2008 and 2020(majority by flooding during the monsoon).

Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2020:

i.In terms of the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2020 by Yale University and Columbia University, India has ranked 168 out of 180 countries with a score of 27.6 out of 100. While Denmark has topped the list with a score of 82.5.

ii.In the same EPI 2020, India ranked 148, 21 positions behind Pakistan (127) in the category of biodiversity and habitat which assesses countries’ actions toward retaining natural ecosystems and protecting the full range of biodiversity within their borders. Click here to know more

iii.India ranked 172 in the environmental health category, it is an indicator that shows     how well the country is protecting its populations from environmental health risks.

i.The last decade saw the highest number of cyclonic storms over the north Indian Ocean since the 1970s. Between 1971 and 2020, 127 cyclonic storms hit India, out of which, the maximum cyclones (33) were recorded between 2011 and 2020.
ii.5 cyclonic storms that hit in 2020:

  • Cyclone Amphan- crossed the West Bengal coast over Sundarbans
  • Cyclone Nisarga – crossed Maharashtra
  • Cyclone Nivar – crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts
  • Cyclone Burevi – landfall in Srilanka
  • Cyclone Gati – landfall over Somalia coast
