Cochin International Airport all set to become India’s first green airport

Cochin International Airport will become the first Indian airport or may be the first in the world to operate on solar power and turn itself to a “Green Airport” which will be inaugurated by the Kerala State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on August 18, 2015.

  • cochinCochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) will be commissioning its first solar power project consisting of 12 MW plant in 45 acres near the cargo complex.
  • This 12MW plant has 46,000 solar panels can produce 52,000 units of power daily.
  • The total cost of the project is around Rs 62 crore.
  • The solar power plant has been set up by Bosch Ltd., Bangalore and completed the entire work of the installation in a short span of six months.
  • A 12MW solar power project set up at the Cochin Airport will generate 18 million units of power annually.
  • It is equivalent to cutting around 3 lakh metric carbon dioxide emission from coal powered power plants over the next 25 years, or planting 30 lakh trees or not driving 750 million miles.
  • The government has also entrusted CIAL with the construction of 8 mini hydel projects.

• Cochin International Airport is an international airport situated in the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India.
• It is located at Nedumbassery, about 30 km (19 mi) northeast of Kochi, it is the busiest and largest airport in the state of Kerala.
• Cochin International Airport is the first in India developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
• It is the Third busiest airport in India in terms of international passenger traffic after Delhi and Mumbai ferrying over 3,751,225 passengers and seventh busiest airport in India carrying 6,814,867 passengers.
