Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023: Indian Men’s Hockey Team won by Defeating Malaysia

India beat Malaysia to clinch record fourth Asian Champions Trophy titleThe 7th edition of the Asian Champions Trophy 2023 held from 3rd to 12th August 2023 in the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.The Indian Men’s hockey team clinched the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2023 Title by defeating Malaysia (4-3) in the finals held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Malaysia secured the Silver Medal in the tournament.

  • This victory marks India’s 4th win in the tournament including 2011,2016,2018,2023  and becomes the Successful team in the tournament surpassing Pakistan(2012,2013,2018).
  • Japan’s men’s hockey team defeated South Korea to secure the Bronze Medal (3rd place).

Note: India and Pakistan shared the 2018 Title due to rain affecting the final.

About Asian Champions Trophy 2023:

i.India hosted the event for the first time since its first edition held in 2011 in Ordos China.

  • It was hosted and organised by Hockey India with an allocation of the Asian Hockey Federation(AHF).

ii.The event witnessed the participation of six teams including  India, Malaysia,Japan, South Korea, Pakistan and China.

iii.The Indian men’s hockey team moved to 3rd position from 4th  in Fédération Internationale de Hockey(FIH) ranking following the title winner of the tournament.

  • India followed the Netherlands in 1st place and Belgium in 2nd place in the FIH ranking.

Mascot: The Elephant named “Bomman” was inspired by the Oscar-winning documentary film ‘The Elephant Whisperers, which shows how the mahout Bomman, along with his wife Bellie, took care of the orphaned baby elephant Raghu.
