April 11: National Safe Motherhood Day 2015

As you may know, April 11th is the National Safe Motherhood Day. WRA India appealed to the Government of India for a declaration of a National Safe Motherhood and subsequently, the government declared 11 April as the National Safe Motherhood Day in the year 2003.

The theme for this year is ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’ – Citizens participation and engagement for improving women’s and children’s health.

Aims at reinforcing the demands for clear and standardized mechanisms and follow through for citizens engagement vis-à-vis policies, schemes and programs on women’s and children’s health.

This day was launched by the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA), India, a nonpartisan, non-profit and non-governmental membership organization that aims to decrease maternal and newborn death globally.

White Ribbon Alliance:

The White Ribbon Alliance is a global coalition of individuals and organizations formed to promote increased public awareness of the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns in the developing, as well as, developed countries. White Ribbon Alliance unites citizens to demand the right to a safe birth for every woman, everywhere. WRA harness the power of local women and men to achieve lasting change.

  • WRA’s mission is to inspire and convene advocates who campaign to uphold the right of all women to be safe and healthy before, during and after childbirth
