93rd Academy Awards – Oscar 2021: Chloé Zhao, Frances McDormand and Anthony Hopkins Won Top Awards

The hostless ceremony was opened by Regina King.

The nominations of the Oscar 2021 were announced by Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas in March 2021.

The Academy Awards is annually presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. 

Highlights of 93rd Academy Awards: 

i.Nomadland directed by Chloé Zhao(Chinese Film Maker) won the most awards including the awards for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Director.

  • Chloé Zhao is the 2nd woman to win the award for Best Director since the Academy award was instituted.
  • She is also the first woman of colour (Asian) to win the award.

ii.Welsh actor, director and film producer Sir Anthony Hopkins (83 years old) won the award for the Best Actor for his performance in the film “The Father”. The award was presented by Joaquin Phoenix.

  • He became the oldest person to win the Oscars for Best Actor.

iii.American actress and producer Frances McDormandwon the Best Actress award for her performance in the film “Nomadland”.

  • This is her 3rd Academy Award for acting, she became only the second woman to win three best actress Oscars.
  • Katharine Hepburn has won the most(four) awards in the best actress category.

iv.Hairstylists Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” became the first Black woman to win in makeup and hairstyling

v.Ann Roth(89 years old), one of the oldest Oscar winners ever, won the award for the costume design of the film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”

vi.The films Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, Soul and Sound of Metal each won two academy awards.

vii.The Oscars paid tribute to the actors, filmmakers, executives and craftspeople who passed away in 2020.

  • Indian Actor Irrfan Khan and costume designer BhanuAthaiya who passed away in 2020 were honoured in the “In Memoriam” section of the 2021 Oscars.
