66th Annual Grammy Awards(2024): Taylor Swift wins Album of the Year for 4th time

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards 2024The 66th Annual Grammy Awards(Grammy 2024) was held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, the United States of America(USA) on 4th February 2024.

  • The Grammy 2024 recognized recordings released between 1st October 2022 and 15th September 2023. The 2024 awards were presented in 94 categories.

Host: Trevor Noah, a South African comedian, hosted the Grammy for the fourth time.

About Grammy Awards: 

The Grammy Awards is an annual recognition presented by the Recording Academy or National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, since 1957 to honour musical artists, compositions, and albums.

New Categories: 

The Recording Academy added 3 New categories for the 2024 edition: African music performance (won by South African artist Tyla), alternative jazz album (won by Meshell Ndegeocello) and pop dance recording (won by Kylie Minogue).

The Recording Academy also moved Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical and Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical to the General Field.

Top Honours

i.Taylor Swift won the Grammy 2024 – Album of the Year for her album Midnights and became the first ever artist to win “Album of the Year” four times.  Previously, she won the award for “Fearless” in 2010, “1989” in 2016, and “Folklore” in 2020.

  • she also won the award under “Best Pop Vocal Album” category
  • With these wins, Taylor has won a total of 14 Grammy Awards from 52 nominations.

ii.Victoria Monét won the Best New Artist at the 2024 Grammys. Her album “Jaguar II” also won Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).

  • Monét was nominated for seven Grammys at the 2024 awards, tied for second-most overall nominations.

iii.Miley Cyrus won Two Grammys under Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo performance for “Flowers.”

  • This marks Miley’s first 2 Grammy trophies.

iv.Billie Eilish O’Connell & Finneas O’Connell won the Song of the year award for “What Was I Made For?” From “Barbie”.

Highlights: 

i.Rapper Killer Mike won three Grammys: Best Rap Album for “Michael”, and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists and Engineers” featuring Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.

ii.SZA won in three different categories: Best R&B Song for her track “Snooze,” Best Progressive R&B Album for “SOS,” and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Ghost in the Machine” with Phoebe Bridgers and was nominated for 9 categories.

Zakir Hussain’s Shakti band won Best Global Music Album for ‘This Moment’:

The band Shakti, led by Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and featuring vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V Selvaganesh, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan and John McLaughlin, has won the Best Global Music Album award for their latest release ‘This Moment’.

  • This marks a significant milestone as the group’s first new album in over 45 years. The album includes eight new compositions.

Points to note: 

i.Indian tabla player and composer Zakir Hussain won a total of 3 Grammys awards in 2024 including the Best Global Music Album as a part of Shakti. The other 2 Grammys are,

  • Best Global Music Performance for ‘Pashto’
  • Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for ‘As We Speak’.

ii.Along with Zakir Hussain, Indian flutist Rakesh Chaurasia won two Grammys as part of the ensemble of American banjo player Béla Fleck and American bassist Edgar Meyer for ‘Pashto’ and ‘As We Speak’.

The Special Merit Award is presented by vote of the Recording Academy’s National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.
