Dia Mirza, Harmanpreet Kaur among 3 Indians in BBC 100 Women List 2023On November 21, 2023, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) released the 11th edition of the list of BBC 100 Women 2023 which includes four Indian women viz. Actress Dia Mirza, Cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, Photographer Arati Kumar-Rao, and Tibetan Buddhist nun Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.

  • It is list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2023.

Highlights:

i.The list is organized into categories like Culture and Education; Entertainment and Sport; Politics and Advocacy; and Science, Health, and Tech.

ii.Harmanpreet Kaur and Dia Mirza are named under the Entertainment & Sport category while Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo is acknowledged under the category of Culture and education.

iii.In 2023, for the first time, this BBC 100 Women list specifically highlights ‘Climate pioneers’ a group of women leading the battle against the climate crisis.

  • The list features 28 Climate Pioneers from across the globe who are inspiring and leading their communities to tackle the devastating impact of climate change.
  • This includes Indian photographer Arati Kumar-Rao.

About Harmanpreet Kaur:

i.She is the Captain of the Indian Women’s National Cricket Team in all three formats of the game-T20Is (Twenty20 Internationals), ODIs (One Day Internationals), and Tests.

ii.In May 2023, She became the first Indian woman to be named as one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year.

iii.She led the Mumbai Indians team to win the inaugural Women’s Premier League in March 2023.

iv.Under her captaincy, India won a Gold Medal in Cricket at the 2022 Asian Games, and silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

v.In 2017 she was awarded with Arjuna Award for Cricket.

vi.She jointly holds the record for leading in the most number of T20I matches (100) alongside Australia’s Meg Lanning.

vii.She became the first Indian player to sign a Big Bash League contract in 2016 with the Sydney Thunders.

About Dia Mirza:

i.Dia Mirza is an award-winning actress who is actively involved in social and environmental issues.

ii.In 2017, she was named UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador, and she also appointed as brand ambassador for the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).

iii.She is also an ambassador for Save the Children, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and a board member of the Sanctuary Nature Foundation.

iv.In 2022, then Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari honoured her with the ‘Mother Teresa Memorial Award’.

About Arati Kumar-Rao:

She is an Independent photographer, writer and National Geographic Explorer. She captures environmental degradation’s impact on biodiversity through her compelling photographs.

  • Currently, on a National Geographic grant, she focuses on documenting forced human migration in India.
  • Her debut book, “Marginlands: Indian Landscapes On The Brink,” has been shortlisted at the TataLitLive! Awards 2023 for first book, non-fiction.

About Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo:

Tenzin Palmo, born in Hertfordshire, England(The United Kingdom), is a renowned author, teacher, and founder of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery in Himachal Pradesh, India. Spending 12 years in a remote Himalayan cave, including three in rigorous meditation retreats, she is recognized as one of the first Westerners ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun.

In 2008, she was awarded the title of Jetsunma (Venerable Master).

  • She is also the author of books “Into the Heart of Life” and “Reflections On A Mountain Lake: Teachings on Practical Buddhism.”
